A Roman Retirement Home on the Adriatic

Advantages: Beautiful, atmospheric, good cafes and shops, mostly free
Disadvantages: Those slippy pavements

In the same way that many Brits go off to spend their twilight years in Spain, so the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to retire in the sun. He chose Croatia’s Adriatic coast, Split to be precise, and he had built for him a magnificent palace. In spite of its grandeur it was largely neglected for several hundred years after the Romans quit Dalmatia and this led to its partial decline; however in the seventh century, many living near to the palace ...
...because of this that so much of the palace is still not only standing, but in use for homes and businesses today. When you see how much still remains it is incredible to think that it dates from the fourth century (with some later additions and tweaking).

Although the Old Town of Split is crammed with interesting and important buildings, the palace is really the jewel in the crown. It is notable for the degree of preservation, in ... more

Split Decision

Advantages: Wonderfully varied scenery; superb climate and excellent local food
Disadvantages: Breakfast

In the end my wife decided we SHOULD visit our Bosnian friends, refugees in Split. The town built round the Roman Emperor Diocletian's palace is superb with narrow streets wending their way under arches and in some cases underground. Small squares house a plethora of little cafes and interesting shops; on every street corner there is something to see: a saint in a niche, a roman pillar, a medieval statue. Then there's the peristyle, complete with two Sphinxes, where we saw an open-air production of Aida. The Adriatic laps up to the walls of the promenade shaded by palms and other trees; the vista from a distance is gloriously " Mediterranean ". We flew from UK to Pula where we visted the ampitheatre and temple, and overnighted in a sort of Communist type holiday camp. The Istrian peninsula is well worth a longer stay than ...

Review of Interrail Pass

An Adriatic Adventure

Advantages: Reasonably priced, realatively quiet still, beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: Food not as good as I expected (see below)

, you can leave your things unattended on the beach while you go to buy drinks or go off for lunch without them being disturbed (but of course, don't leave anything really valuable lying around). One side of this beach has a number of bars and cafes and a really good restuarant which does great octopus salad. The old town of Split is centred around the remains of Diocletian's Palace, which was built as a holiday home for the Roman Emperor. You can stroll round most of the ruins freely, but one or two parts of it have a charge and you can join a guided tour to get the most out of it. Underneath the Palace is a very good craft market where you can buy all kinds of locally made goods to take home - the jewellery is especially pretty. Split also has a number of highly regarded museums (dedicated to local anthropology, antiquitiesand ...
