Design hotel in Stockholm

Advantages: Design hotel, good breakfast, nice area
Disadvantages: Not in the very center of the city

I have been in the "Rex Hotel" for a long weekend in April 2008. The area The hotel is situated in a quiet street 10-15 minutes walking from the center. In this area there are a lot of supermarkets (including one Lidl), restaurants (Italians, Chineses) and a lot of take aways. There is also a 7eleven that closes around 11.00 pm. The hotel When you enter at the hotel you can see the reception, a sofa and a internet desk (free to use). Our room was in the first floor and it was nice. Not huge but with space enough to have a table, a chest of drawers and a sofa. The bathroom is quite impressive with black stone in a very design style. In the room there are available two bottles of sparkling water and a detailed dossier of the attractions of the area with a lot of useful information. You can access free of charge to ...

Review of Rex Hotel, Stockholm

A leisurely walk to the city (and topless Swedish blondes)

Advantages: Excellent location, good facilities, nice bar
Disadvantages: Could get a windowless room

INTRODUCTION Having lived there for a few years, Stockholm is always a favourite destination of mine and it still feels like a second home. Strange then, that up until this point I haven?t covered anything from there in my reviews. Here is where I put that shameful record straight. Almost every year I manage to go there for a course of some kind, and last year was no exception. In the middle of winter, I found myself back in the city that holds many memories for me, for the first time in this hotel in an area quite familiar to me as you shall see. As for the title? Well you'll have to read on won't you! KUNGSHOLMEN ISLAND The Amarantan hotel is situated on the island of Kungsholmen. Now what does Stockholm have in common with Venice? Well, they?re both cities built on islands, and ? The Kings Island? just across ...

Review of First Hotel Amaranten, Stockholm

A diplomatic disgrace

Advantages: The funny parts are hilarious, some interesting cultural snippets
Disadvantages: much unnecessary political stuff; unlikeable author

Brigid Keenan's "Diplomatic Baggage" is a prime example of one of those books where one does not have to particularly like the narrator in order to gain enjoyment from reading. Perhaps it's hard to believe that I laughed out loud while reading this on an aeroplane, but seconds later found myself involuntarily clenching my fists and seething in anger? But that is exactly how I felt, reading these memoirs of a "trailing spouse". A "trailing spouse", for those who don't know, is the wife (sometimes the husband, though, I am sure) of a diplomat, member of the armed forces or even an international businessman, who follows their husband around the world, living wherever the job takes them. Brigid Keenan's husband is a British diplomat who worked mostly for the European Union, taking up postings in places such Barbados, India, Trinidad ...
