Discount Railcards

A young person's rail card is for the young generation whom are currently between 16 and 25 years old. The card is also for mature students whom are 26 years of age or older. I got my first rail card last year in February as I realised how much I was using the railway to travel. I just recently ... Read review

I'm young enough, are you?

Advantages: get a third off train tickets, lasts for a whole year,
Disadvantages: can't get discounts during peak periods.

...can get the young person's discount even if I order my train tickets online, which saved me time in having to wait in the train station queues which can be very annoying and delaying.

I even got to like the rail card more when I learnt that I could save on other services rather than the train services. I noted that I could also save on hotels such as holiday inn, crown plaza, ilovefilm.com etc.

A huge disadvantage ...
...you can't use the rail card during the peak period in the morning, this has proved to cost me a lot of money specially at times when I had to travel to London Victoria in the morning with a single ticket costing £18 and sometimes £22 which is ridiculous.
Overall me and the product get along, the rail card is very smart and small therefore wouldn't take lots of space in your pocket or handbag. The savings of a third on every train ticket you ... more

...really get much of a discount before 10am. The minimum fare on a ticket before 10am is 16.00 and all though standard day returns are dear; they aren't that dear so it doesn't really come in handy at that time of day. The most expensive standard day return I sell is 13.30 which is from way out in Essex back into central London so you wouldn't save money on that. However if you do usually pay 20 pounds a day (!) for a standard day return then, yay, ...
...if a ticket with the discount comes to less than 1 pound, it will set to 1 pound automatically anyway. The main card holder must also be at least 16 years old. Family rail cards are non refundable and can be replaced if lost or stolen if the receipt is kept with a 5 pound admin charge. SENIOR RAIL CARD You must be at least 60 years old to purchase this card. Again it is twenty pounds for the year with this rail card. You can save a third on fares ...

Not just for young people!!!!!

Advantages: Cheap to buy and you save a lot!
Disadvantages: min fare applies b4 10am

Young Person's Railcard Intro As friendly as I am, there are some times that I just don't want to talk: when I am on the bus, first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, I've not managed to develop a look that says "Don't you dare speak to me!" Not having the ability to conjure up this useful glare means I have every Tom, Dick and Harry talking to me on the bus. Now I love talking, but there are limits. I know all about what operations you will ...
...I've also found out a lot about stamp collecting: nope i'm still not interested. I also know, thanks to one over talkative gentleman, what other routes the bus driver does. Armed with this useful information, I've decided I've learnt all I can - or perhaps all I can stand to learn: I'm going to have to find another way to travel :-) I've been travelling from Llandudno to Bangor University, mon-fri, for the last two years. Apart from the odd occasion ...

...minimum charge, meaning that the discount could be considerably less. There are also no discounts for people travelling on Eurostar. However, the Card does allow you to receive discounts on transfers that you may need to take across the London Underground system. Apart from that, discounts are valid across most journeys that you can take, whether it's single or return, to Inverness or Penzance. It does represent excellent value for money, even if ...
...However, if you're travelling from, say, Manchester to London, it costs £32.85 with a Railcard compared to £49.80 for everyone else - a saving of almost £17. This is practically the price of the railcard itself! This means that even if you make just a couple of trips on rail over a year, you are saving money! You can apply for a railcard by either filling in an application form (available at rail stations, travel shops and online, at www.youngpersons-railcard.co.uk) ...

Spotters Paradise

...Rail Card operates as a discount card for the national network. It gives you reduced fairs on nearly all tickets that can be purchased for journeys, even if they require you using more than one franchise. The current fee was when I bought mine 9 months ago, £18. I should not imagine this has changed too much in that time. This entitles you to the reduced fairs for 12 months. But of course, the important thing is what level of discount you get. Being ...
...get around a 33% discount on all journeys you make – provided they fall withing the stipulations, something I will detail further on. The 33% that they have stated is not exact – The journey I make most often I only receive a 30% discount, having said that, 30% is not bad value. The curious thing about the Young Persons Rail Card is that you do not have to be young to hold it. Anyone between the age of 16-25 can posses a card. You are supposed to ...

it pays to be young with this railcard

Advantages: save 1/3 on all fares, even advance ones, definite savings in year
Disadvantages: some of the restrictions about travelling early in the week

If you are aged between 16-25 or a mature student, and in full time education, travel by train a lot, or make more than just one or two big trips a year it is quite simply madness not to get one of these. It is possible to save more then the £26 annual cost in one trip. For example I travel by train very regularly and a return bought on the day for the trip I make most often without railcard would be in the region of £90. When purchased with the ...
...bigger savings than this, as I often do, by buying several weeks in advance, either on the internet or in person at a manned station. What is good about this is that you still receive 1/3 off an already heavily discounted price. There are a couple of problems with this card. For starters if you want to use the card before 10am monday to fridays then a £12 minimum charge applies, so if you want to use it to commute short distances to work for example, ...

Beats the Tube by miles!

Advantages: Quick, regular services, comfort
Disadvantages: Expensive

As cabin crew at Heathrow, I find myself using the Express about twice a week. I generally commute from my home town by train into Paddington and either the Express or Connect service to Heathrow. And vice versa. About the Heathrow Express: The Service was launched in 1998 and ten years later is still going strong. The trains run from early (around 5am) in the morning until late (just before midnight) generally every 15 minutes. Tickets: There are various ways to buy tickets. You can book online, buy at the ticket office or machine, or even buy on the train for a £2 surcharge. Prices: The Express is not cheap. For example: the cheapest return fare is £28 for an adult! A first class return is £46! Discounts: If you have a railcard you can get big discounts. Heathrow airport workers get a 50% discount when they show ...

Stepping back in time.......

Advantages: Great value to see the whole island
Disadvantages: none that we found

We went to the Isle of Wight last summer for our holiday and I was surprised to see an old London Underground tube train, this was the "Island Line". Running from Ryde Pier Head it runs 8 and half miles through the towns of Ryde, Brading, Sandown, Lane and Shanklin. A typical day return to Shanklin from the Pier Head would be £3.70 Cheap Evening Return Tickets are available after 6pm daily and are valid for travel between Ryde Esplanade and Shanklin prices being £2.00 Adult £1.00 Child (No railcard discounts) To get to the Island Line you can take the FastCat from Portsmouth Harbour (South West Trains from London Waterloo), straight to Ryde Pier Head, journey time being approximately 15 mins or by Hovercraft from Southsea with a journey time of approximately 10 mins. The Island Line is a wholly owned subsidiary ...
