The DLR was first opened in 1987 the serve the development of Docklands, London. The Docklands as we know it now is much larger than it used to be. The original DLR consisted of just 15 stations and 11 trains. Since then a number of extensions have been added, that now serve Bank, London City Airport, Beckton and Lewisham. Today the DLR has 31KM of railway, 38 stations and 81 vehicles.
HOW EASY IS IT TO BUY A TICKET?
All Docklands Light Railway Stations have ticket vending machines, with some having additional ticket windows, where you can purchase tickets or ask for information. If you don't purchase a ticket, then there is sometimes an opportunity to buy a ticket on board for the passenger services assistant. As well as this, all DLR stations now have oyster readers and machines where you can purhcase an oyster ticket, or top up your pay as you go.
FREQUENCY OF TRAINS.
If you turn up at a station for a train, you will never have to wait more then about 8 minutes. But - more often than not, a train to your destination is only a minute or so away. Provided you turn up at a station between opening and close of service, you will never have to wait very long at all. Generally, Trains to all destinations are every 5-10 minutes apart.
FACILITIES FOR DISABLED PERSONS.
All Docklands trains have a level platform-to-train gradient, making it easy for those with imparements. As well as this the DLR was the first fully accessible rail network in the uk to offer easier travel to thiose in wheelchairs or with mobility imparements, or with pushchairs or heavy luggage. All stations have step free access, whether the station is at street level, ramp access or a lift service. All lifts have fully enabled alarm systems, which allow you to talk directly with a member of staff in an emergency situation.
RELIABILITY OF THE TRAINS.
Never in my 4 years of living near London, and using the DLR frequently, have I seen any sort of problem or delay when it comes to using the DLR. There isnt really much else to say here at all. As relability is of an exceptional standard.
COMFORT OF THE TRAINS.
An advantage of the DLR is the fact that it is all automatically operated. Meaning that there is no driver. This comes at a cost. the comfort of the trains isnt great. journeys can sometimes be very "wobbley" and you do need to hold on at times for fear of falling out of your seat. If you fall asleep on one of the trains, you may just get a sharp jolt that will wake you up. The seats are of satisfactory standard, a bit hard and narrow, nothing special really.
ON BOARD FACILITIES
There isnt really mucyh in the way of onboard facilities, there are no toilets or buffet or anything like that. Its just like the London Underground. A standard train, that is designed for a relativly short journey, and to get you from A to B in the quickest amount of time possible.
GENERAL STATE OF TRAINS AND PLATFORMS.
Docklands Light Railway stations and trains are very very clean and tidy. There are always plenty of litter bins, which people seem to use. The outside of the trains could do with a wash, but there isnt really any problem here at all.
SECURITY ON THE TRAINS.
All Docklands trains have a meber of staff on board at all times. There is also CCTV on all trains and emergency help points and alarms on all trains and stations. Additionally, there are specially employed persons who patrol stations and trains during late night services.
HOW GOOD ARE THE STAFF?
Staff are generally quite helpful and will do all they can to help you. But you do come accross some people who have such a bad attitude. You get the feeling that some of the staff just don't want to be there and don't like the job that they do.

Good review, brought back at lot of memories. I had to travel from the Bank to Canary Wharf on a daily basis, but retired in 2002. Must admit we did have some days when the DLR would not run for one reason or another, so pleased to hear that it has improved and more stations to boot. Sylva
