I have to say that when in Florida I have always used Dollar Car Rentals, usually opting for the Airport Pick up and Drop off...We've used them at Tampa, Orlando and Kissimee..
Everyone hates paying those extras, and that ' including free car hire' that we keep getting thrown down our necks everytime we pick up a Florida Brochure is very misleading until you've read the small and smaller print..
On average a Family of say four people will pay around £400 for a two week car hire on top of their holiday price, and that is for an intermediate sized car or midsize, don't forget in the USA they may have bigger everything except for the Boot..you will get your car it will probably have a big engine, and you will have been told that it is a four or five person car..I bet you wont get 4 or 5 peoples luggage in the boot..it is always worth considering an upgrade, sure it will cost you more, but in the end for two weeks it will be more comfortable..
Dollar make things very easy and they have always thus far helped us as much as we have ever needed a helping hand, we prefer Dollar and always hold out when offered an upgrade ( usually because we have booked the car we need) .. One of the favourite tricks in Florida is to try and get the passenger to upgrade to a slightly better car...this is often done even if they do not have the car you originally booked, because if you agree to upgrade they can get more money out of you, however, if you say no thanks I prefer the car we have already paid for..then the chances are you will be given a bigger and better car at no extra cost, if they don't have your original vehicle in stock and believe me it happens quite frequently..so stick to your guns and hold out...you can always upgrade your car after a day or two, if you want to pay for it !!..
Most of all enjoy you holiday ..Florida is a great place to drive...and the people are friendly...
Thanks for the 'upgrade' warning.
We'll be booking a car big enough for us and our luggage so it won't be necessary. I just hope they don't push it too much.

I have only rented from Dollar once, at Oakland Airport, California, and found them extremely helpful. Against the practice you describe in your op, they upgraded me for free, although cars in the lower category were available. I had to return the car after two days with brakes malfunction - they replaced the car and waived the rental fee for the remaining three days! Maybe it was just my charming smile LOL. ///// Once again a very interesting and informative op. Cheers, Hans
