Advantages Dreams of a lost youth

AH! THE DREAM.

- The thrill of the open road
- The wind rustling through your hair
- The glamour of the sleek machine
- The envy of the other drivers
- The glory of the sun, sea and sky

OH! THE REALITY

- You can’t put the top up/down when travelling at more than five miles per hour
- Sorry, we’re on the Interstate for the next 35 miles
- Put the top up its starting to rain
- Put the top down I can’t see the scenery
- The traffic is extremely noisy today
- Turn the radio up, I can’t hear the band
- With the top up I’ve got a big blind spot behind me on the passenger’s side
- What’s that dreadful smell?
- Put the top up, I’m too hot
- Put the top down, I’m too hot
- You can’t have the air conditioning on when the top is down
- I’m getting sunburnt on my bald spot
- I’ve got dust/a feather/garbage/spray/bugs in my eye/nose/mouth/ear
- Put the top up, I’m too cold
- Put the top down, I’m too cold
- I think that truck driver just dropped his sandwich on me

THE VERDICT

We recently hired a car for a week’s trip to Florida. We thought a convertible would be a fun idea (there were just the two of us and we hadn’t driven one before). We drove 850 miles in seven days. This review is no reflection on the car or the hire company!! This is one more fading dream of youth that has been dented by the experience of middle age.

We rented by internet, arranged by Dollar UK. Their Platinum package cost £ 290 a week but included every imaginable extra.

    Alan, I go along with Schmutzie and was smiling about dream and reality because I´m considering a Z4 or maybe the new SLK and my wife´s criticism on such an acquisition was just like your cons after we did extensive test drives this summer
