Whenever I visit my Aunt and Uncle in Strathkiness, I always visit St. Andrews and there I found a quaint restaurant. It is called the ‘The Doll's House Restaurant’ and is located in the heart St Andrews, the home of golf. It is a friendly and yet very intimate restaurant, which is entering its eighth year of business and seats around eighty customers. The restaurant is furnished with warm candlelit tables and the walls are adorned with wooden shelves, containing many obsolete toys and games from the past, allowing the mind to wonder back to the carefree childhood days. So why not sit down and enjoy some time away from the hassle and bustle created by modern life.

‘Opening Times’

‘The Doll's House Restaurant’ is opened from 10am till 10pm Monday to Saturday and 12 noon till 10pm Sunday.

Lunches are served between 12 noon and 3pm. A set two-course menu will cost you under £7.00 per person.
Dinners are served between 6pm and 10pm. There is an a la carte menu here.

‘The Menu’

The menu is changed on a weekly basis incorporating the traditional Scottish with French influence. To support the local economy, ‘The Doll's House Restaurant’ claims to ‘use only the best of local produce’ in the area. On a daily basis there are always special dishes to tempt the palette. Yum!

Whatever your dietary requirement there is something to tempt everyone as ‘The Doll's House Restaurant’ will cater for all needs. The food is cooked freshly and if like me you like small portions the all you have to do is ask. Children and teenagers are not discouraged either, with a menu designed for them too. ‘The Doll's House Restaurant’ is family friendly, particularly during the day.

Menu Example demonstrating their extensive range of dishes:

Lunchtime Two Courses set price £6.95

*Starter*
Freshly made soup of the day.
Warmed taco shell with lightly spiced guacamole and a chilli and lime yogurt dressing.
Salad of cheddar cheese, garlic croutons, cherry tomatoes and pineapple with a black pepper and lime vinaigrette.
Pork, apricot and hazelnut terrine with a fruits of the forest compôte flavored with Drambuie.
Steamed rope mussels in white wine with a tomato and coriander jus. (Supplement £2.25)
Compound salad of chicken, nectarine and plums bound in an orange and chive mayonnaise.

*Main Course*
Roast stuffed loin of pork with apple and cinnamon with a Calvados sauce.
Poached Scottish salmon placed on a leek and pimento cream.
Pan-fried rump steak with a horseradish and black pepper sauce. (Supplement £2.95)
Mixed seafood pancake with a fish velouté and chive sauce.
Hungarian beef goulash with scented boiled rice.
Cantonese stir fry of vegetables, nuts, bean sprouts and field mushrooms
Pan-fried supreme of chicken with a mushroom, tarragon, tomato and red wine sauce. (Supplement £2.45)
Deep-fried haddock in a beer batter with a Thai chilli sauce. (Supplement £2.15)
Spinach, mushroom, onion and tomato lasagne.

NB. All the above meals are served with fresh seasonal vegetables and potatoes

This menu is excellent value for money and believes me when I say that you will not want a sweet either. Usually a nice cup of coffee goes down a treat. Have I got your mouth watering yet?

Now for an example of the evening meal menu:
  • Starter*
Freshly made soup of the day. (£2.45)
Smoked salmon and salmon terrine with an onion and prawn compote bound in a tomato mayonnaise. (£4.95)
Steamed rope mussels in vermouth with a coarse grain mustard and honey cream sauce. (£4.95)
Savoury tartlet filled with beef tomato, blue cheese and smoked bacon coated in a port wine sauce. (£4.25)
Salad of avocado, hazelnuts, nectarine and plums with black pepper and thyme vinaigrette.
    £3.65
Shiitake mushroom and tarragon omelette with a tomato jus.
    £3.65
  • Main Course*
Pan-fried Angus sirloin steak with a horseradish and black pepper red wine sauce. (£12.45)
Chicken, leek and wild mushroom pancake with a white wine and herb cream. (£8.95)
Poached Scottish salmon with a lemon, cashew and spring onion butter. (£8.95)
Braised shoulder shank of lamb with a plum and apple chutney red wine sauce. (£9.25)
Grilled sea bass fillets layered with smoked salmon and bacon glazed with an orange hollandaise sauce. (£12.95)
Spinach, mushroom, onion and tomato lasagne. (£6.95)
Grilled lamb and garlic sausages with a red wine onion gravy and Dijon mustard mash. (£7.50)
Seared swordfish steak with an orange, pimento and pink peppercorn butter. (£11.75)
Duck stir fry with vegetable bean sprouts and black bean sauce. (£11.95)

NB. All the above meals are served with fresh seasonal vegetables and potatoes.

The food is well cooked and also well presented. I have never had any problems with the food and I must confess to being very fussy when it comes to my food. So what are you waiting for? Go on, try this restaurant out and have a lovely meal which okay is a little pricey, but believe me you will not be left wanting. The experience is calming as the relaxed mood and the nostalgic past, congers up the days of innocence and happiness. This restaurant is one to try in the future.
