on the bridge. Nevertheless, the sights to see while traveling over it have always been breathtaking. The journey across offers a lovely view of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay, where they meet. One can see Naval ships, cargo ships, and pleasure boats in the waters. If the weather conditions are rough, there is often seaspray hitting the windshield during the ride. This can be frightening, but it can also be regarded as a marvel of industrialism and nature at the same time. The two tunnels of the bridge are clean and quickly traveled through. I don't find them claustrophobic, but some people do. The tunnels are not long, are clean, and are bright. One can easily pass through them in about two minutes.
Once you've reached the mainland, the trip to the "beach" of VirginiaBeach takes about 10 to 20 minutes, depending ...

Food & Drink
Very reasonably priced.
We ate at the Bella Vista Café. It served quick snacks and I must report my burger went down a treat. The views from Bella Vista were lovely you could see the ocean and had great views of the private dolphinbeach.

Octopus Bar & Grill, which serves exectely what you would expect... grilled foods, pizza and salads again with lovely ocean and marina views.
And the Principal Restaurant wheer you can either use the buffet, go , ala carte or simply pick up a fresh snack.
Gift Shop
As you would expect, everything form cuddly dolphin toys to Deep Ocean videos. Lots of choice and not too badly priced although somethings were alittle steep, but I guess that makes up for the reasonably priced food ...

Booking accommodation for the Christmas period is always tough. Ditto booking accommodation on a strict budget, booking accommodation when there are a few of you, and booking accommodation in a specific location with specific features. These were all issues when we booked our accommodation for our Christmas stay in Byron Bay, and even though we booked what we thought was well in advance (early October), our choices were limited. For this reason we went with the first hostel that could fit us in - the Backpackers Inn on the Beach - and booked for the 4 of us to stay 4 nights.
