Merengue makes you happy! Advantages: Friendly staff, well presented Disadvantages: Presents can be expensive Me and my partner went to the Riu Merengue hotel in Puerto Plata in June 2004. I remember stepping off the plane and thinking that I had never felt heat like it before - it was glorious. The porters at the airport are quite persistent, so make sure you are firm when you say no to them. If you do want their services then expect to pay about £2 for them to carry you bags 20 feet! The hotel lobby is open plan and very well decorated. The outside space is full of palm trees and well looked after grass and plants. The hotel buildings are no taller than two storeys, so your eyeline will not be disrupted by ugly multi-storey buildings. BEWARE!!! Advantages: Beach Disadvantages: Nasty customer service and security ...Cana, Dominican Republic, read this!! Paradisus Punta Cana resort staff couldn't care less for its guests safety and wellbeing!! I would like to warn travellers who are traveling to Punta Cana about the bad experience we had at the Hotel Paradisus Punta Cana by Meliá this last July. We were robbed from the safety box in our room of all our cash and my wife´s credit card which was subsequently used in 5 different fraudulent store purchases that one ... ...evidence of violence (the safety box had been opened with a key, and locked again) that we should "just get cash with our other bank card, and just continue with our trip.!!" We received no apology nor satisfaction from the management, and have received no answer or explanation until this moment, and this is suposedly a 5 star hotel!! Victoria Beach and Golf Resort Dominican Republic Advantages: Near the beach, friendly staff Disadvantages: Poor management, insects in food, items stolen from rooms. We stayed here in July 2008. The staff are lovely, friendly people who are over worked and underpaid. The bar and waiting staff are actually very clever people who speak many languages. They make most of their earnings from tips, so be generous (if you still want to go after reading this). I must stress that the entertainment, bar and waiting staff are fantastic, before I make my next point. We had a mobile phone stolen from our room and numerous ... ...from their rooms during our stay. Management will not accept or investigate these complaints. Management, do not know the meaning of customer sevice and can be abrupt & rude to both employees and staff. The all inclusive wrist bands are very flimsy and if (or when rather) they fall off, there is a $20 USD replacement charge. Riu Bachata, Dominican republic Advantages: Friendly staff, clean hotel, good choice of food and fantastic weather Disadvantages: Locals take over the place at the weekend ...all inclusive holiday at the Riu Bachata was perfect. The place was very clean, lots of choices of food, and plenty sports and entertainment facilities (if you're the energetic sort!) The staff are very friendly, the rooms are spacious, clean and come with optics containing vodka, rum, gin, and whisky, and a drinks fridge for mixers. All around the complex is drinks dispensers and bars ready to top up your pint pot or wine glass. The hotel is part ... ...into the complex and completely takeover the place, and if you're the adventurous sort, theres not much to do offsite locally. Gran Ventana Beach Resort. Advantages: Good service in the restaurants. Disadvantages: No entertainment. Over all our family holiday we had in the Dominican Republic was excellent and we really enjoyed it. The service in the restaurants was fantastic and the food at the hotel was good. However if you have got teenagers then there is nothing for them to do there during the day or at night. At night time the entertainment isn't very good, unless u enjoy drinking. Also the swim-up bar is adults only so children and teenagers can't get served. We had a ... ...and the bar man wouldn't serve them, I then asked for two soft drinks for them and he gave the drinks straight to the girls. Another thing is that when the hotel is busy then you can strugle to find a free sunbed.
