Memories of Sicily

Advantages: Beautiful, Unique and great value for money
Disadvantages: None, in my view, the prettiest place in the world!

Memories of Sicily The island of Sicily lies off the south coast of Italy in the Mediterranean sea. It is famous for its vast coastline, historic landmarks and for homing the biggest volcano in Europe. This was my third visit to Sicily and we were staying in the small coastal town of Taormina. I sat, my head buried in my English book, writing a piece of coursework on 'An Inspector Calls'. I gazed up and cast my eyes over the rails that circled my balcony. I dropped my pen on the table. It slowly rolled off and cluttered through a small gap in the floor of the balcony. The view I was confronted with was staggering. My eyes weaved through the tangled city of chimneys. Their weathered terracotta tops balancing precariously on the tips of the hand made towers. Chimneys tangled up with archways of stone and exotic roof top ...

Review of Taormina, Sicily

Even the dogs have souls

Advantages: Marvellous read
Disadvantages: none

In Northern Italy is the valley of the river Po. It lies between the Po and the Apennines and it is here that the little world of Don Camillo can be found. The name of the actual village is immaterial as there are countless villages just like Don Camillo’s, scattered across the region. Stories are to be found at every field, every river and every crossroad. The climate is always the same, never too hot and never too cold. The local wine is the finest in all of Italy, the girls are the most beautiful, the cheese is the most excellent, and, according to the author, even the dogs have souls. Here we will come to meet the village priest Don Camillo, his adversary Peppone, the Communist Mayor and local mechanic, and a host of other characters who make up the local community. You should not be surprised that Christ watches ...

Review of The Little World of Don Camillo - Giovanni Guareschi

Big ideas in a little world

Advantages: beautifully written
Disadvantages: bitty

I first encounnered Don Camillo when radio 4 took it upon themselves to dramatise his activities. Utterly hooked, I tracked him down to a TV series, long off screen, and a selection of books. On closer investigation, I discovered that the books were compilations of tales that had appeared in a certain magazine some time back. Don camillo and friends were born out of a happy accident, a late submission and a great imagination. "The little world of Don Camillo" is the first installment in this series, and the whole collection can be picked up in a single volume, which I recomend. It's not long after the second world war, Italy has thrown of fachism, there's a communist movement, and poverty abounds. Don Camillo is priest to a village somewhere along the Po river, in northern Italy. He's a big man, he's seen battle, he's still not above ...
