Irelands hidden treasure
Review of Donegal (Ireland) by Maia

Advantages: Stunning scenery, good craic, not touristy
Disadvantages: Slightly inaccessible

...In my opinion, County Donegal has the most spectacular scenery in the whole of Ireland: hundreds of miles of coastline with the highest sea-cliffs in Europe, beautiful beaches, and inland there are rivers, glens and bogland hills, not to mention the more barren ‘moonlike’ stretches of Connemara. The Rough Guide to Ireland raves about the country’s second largest county saying: “the demonically daunting peninsulas of the northern reaches are immediately ...
...Donegal highlands”. It reminds me of Cornwall and the highlands of Scotland … so if you like either, you’ll love County Donegal. ++ WHERE IS IT? ++ Donegal is the most northerly part of Ireland (above Northern Ireland), which is a bit weird when locals talk about going ‘up’ to Belfast (which is geographically south). With a spectacular 200 mile coastline, County Donegal is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and north; Counties Derry, ... Read review

The Road to Donegal
Review of Donegal (Ireland) by HappyBunny

Advantages: Lovely scenary, Short distance between each attraction, Cheap car fuel!
Disadvantages: The road signs can be hilariously confusing sometimes

...far! However, having visited Donegal I can understand why Ireland has such a reputation for it’s outstanding beauty, hospitality and of course, story telling. I’m about to take you on a trip I recently made to Donegal and I fear it’s only a fraction of what Donegal and Ireland has to offer – my apologies to all those effected by my ignorance. However, this is what I got up to (steady!) for 2 days. Enjoy! DOAGH FAMINE VILLAGE ...
...hovel) illustrates the homes of Donegal inhabitants over the last few centuries. Our tour guide related stories to us of the Irish potato famine and the lives of both Protestant and Catholic inhabitants: both communities having to face the same hardships that were brought about by natural disasters. There is a small cluster of buildings as you enter the village though, that are original. One, we were told was once occupied by our guide’s family ... Read review

The best place in the world
Review of Donegal (Ireland) by gallaron

Advantages: Beautiful and uncrowded.
Disadvantages: Inaccessible

As a native of Donegal I found it interesting to find some reviews of my lovely county. Donegal without doubt is the nicest county in Ireland scenery wise and people wise, although some other counties have some wonderful features there's a wonderful mix in Donegal. If you wanted to start I'd suggest South West Donegal and go up along the coastline. In Donegal town make sure you visit the Castle and the ruined Abbey down by the quay. Then carry on ...
...is the largest town in Donegal and is a buzzing area at the moment with lost of bars and some nice restaurants. Donegal is also home to the largest Gaeltacht (Irish speaking area) in Ireland and villages such as Gleann Cholm Cille or Bun Beag are wonderful places in the summer and you can take Irish classes there. With no train Donegal can be a bit inaccessible which is possibly a good thing as it hasn't been overcrowded by tourists and over developed ... Read review

...land in this county. Donegal is the most westerly county in Ireland - it lies with the Altantic Ocean on one side and borders with two counties in Northern Ireland - County Fermanagh and County Londonderry ( or Derry ) The Altantic provides the most amazing back drop - it has been known you can be lucky enough to watch the dophins in the sea at some points during the summer - NOt what you expect to see in ireland Hey !! Donegal is ideal for those ...
...lots of interesting features in Donegal - such as Killybegs which is a port where lots of large fishing ships dock - and they are from all over the world. Beauty Lies To The North
Review of Donegal (Ireland) by kfingleton

Advantages: Ireland's most beautiful county
Disadvantages: Too far up for some, the roads

The problem with Donegal is its location, while there are plenty of tourist visitors who manage to reach Ireland's most Northerly county every year, there just aren't enough who bother to travel that far. But what these people are missing is the finest county in Ireland. Donegal is in the very Northwest tip of Ireland, presume that many people haven't even heard of it, so I suggest you get a map out now. It's only a couple of degrees cooler than ...
...you'll need to get to Donegal is a car. The public transport infrastructure is awful (trains, what trains?) and the roads aren't that bad, well, not extremely bad. The signposts can be bad, so bring a good map too. Also bring clothes for all weathers, 'cos you never know what you are going to get up there. Inishowen is possible the most scenic part of Ireland and the tiny village of Malin, twice winner of the national Tidy Town award, is the perfect ... Read review
