Dorset is I think one of the greatly under-rated counties of England. A lot of people going to the South West for their holidays target Devon and Cornwall - and both are delightful-but at best hurry through Dorset. Yet this county has a great deal to offer the visitor ranging from typically English, rustic, villages, to the sophistication of Bournemouth, the elegance of Poole, the delights of Georgian Weymouth, the beauty of the coastline and the joys of small towns such as Bridport, Dorchester and Lyme Regis. It is not only very compact but in many ways an almost perfect microcosm of England.
Literary buffs will find Dorset is no backwater for this is Hardy country and it was the home for part of his life of T.E.Lawrence.Dorset also has its place in agrarian history as the Tolpuddle Martyrs serve to remind us.
Celebrities are beginning to "discover" Dorset, Meryl Streep, filmed at Lyme Regis and then are now reports that Madonna is buying a country mansion in Dorset.
Lulworth Cove is a spot well worth visiting,as are the small towns such as Wareham. Then there are the wonderful country pubs, Dorset really does have some gems. There are plenty of good eateries and in the larger towns a good stock of hotels, guest houses and homely bed and breakfast places. Dont too overlook the possibility of farm stays.. Another big plus point is that most places are rarely crowded and driving in the rural parts of the county is nearly always a delight.
Madonna? I didnt know that! Id love to go here. Some more info would be good. xx

Thanks very much for your observations Helly Belly. As you say it is arguably best to visit out-
of-season and thank goodness Dorset continues to be greatly underrated. I think also one
of the great aspects of this compact county is that it is a microcosm of England. It has not
been spoilt, neither has it lost its traditional charms.
