Douro Valley, Northern Portugal

Douro Valley, Northern Portugal

... Looking around, you see some of the scenes replicated in reality, with vineyards climbing the slopes on either bank of the Douro, while the river winds away among them on its journey to the sea, a journey taken in the past by fleets of rabelos, the flat-bottomed barges designed to navigate ... * Exploring the Douro Valley – ways and means *

My wife and I had toyed with the idea of taking the train for the whole of our tour of the Douro Valley in northern Portugal. We are rather railway devotees, and the journey is perfectly practicable by rail, supplemented with judicious use of buses for side-trips to sites of interest off the track. We also toyed with the idea of a river cruise, of which a number are available, ...

* The Douro *

The River Douro rises in the Spanish foothills of the Pyrenees, and flows west for nearly 900 kilometres before reaching the sea at Porto. For over a hundred of these kilometres it forms the border between Spain and Portugal, running mainly through a canyon; this stretch has now been designated as the International Douro Natural Park, administered jointly ... more

), though perhaps without the wine. Not cheap, but well worth the price. Indeed, you could certainly stay for less, possibly much less, elsewhere in the area, but I doubt you?ll find better value. * Recommendation * As you may have detected from the above, we loved the Casa do Visconde. Welcoming and relaxing, efficient without being fussy, stylish without being stuffy, unusual without being outré ? all this amid outstanding scenery, plus excellent facilities and food. It?s a lovely place, and I can?t recommend it too highly. © torr 2009 For a review of the Douro Valley region, see: http://travel.ciao.co.uk/DouroValleyNorthernPortugalReview5839541 ...

Review of Casa do Visconde de Chanceleiros, Pinhao

Vintage Character

Advantages: Full of interest, pleasantly unpretentious, reasonably priced
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little downbeat, even dour

by foot and bus in any case. Finally, don?t miss the funicular railway which carries you smoothly up from the quayside with still more views of the river as you ascend. * Onwards and outwards * Porto is an excellent base from which to explore northern Portugal and even adjacent parts of north-western Spain. Following our brief visit, we did the obvious thing and went on east up the Douro Valley, about which further reviews will follow. But you could equally head north-east to the mediaeval cities of Braga and Guimarães, north up the coast to the pilgrim destination of Santiago de Compostela, south to the university town and former capital Coimbra, or undertake a grand tour of the whole region. * How to get there * In the mercantile tradition of the place, it would be good to go by sea, but I believe Porto is ...
