Dover Castle

Dover Castle

If you are anything like me, then probably, the word "Dover" conjures up images of White Cliffs, seagulls and maybe even Dame Vera Lynne and Blue Birds. Whilst I have seen 50% of these images in Dover in reality, the Blue Birds and Dame Vera have so far eluded me. If, like us, you are regular ... Read review

BRITAIN'S FRONT LINE FORTRESS

Advantages: A Full Day Out. Educational. Interesting. Centuries of History. The Views
Disadvantages: Go early if you want to take an underground tour.

...50% of these images in Dover in reality, the Blue Birds and Dame Vera have so far eluded me. If, like us, you are regular travellers to the continent via Dover, then you cannot have failed to have seen Dover Castle perched up high above the White Cliffs overlooking the town to the west and port to the due south.

I wonder how many of you have actually visited Dover Castle as a tourist attraction though…..

…..never mind, ...
...for £4.50. I have visited Dover Castle on around six occasions over the last twenty years, the last time being on a beautiful August (2005) day, escorting my wife, her sister and my Polish parents-in-law.

Although Dover Castle is a very prominent landmark, for some extraordinary reason I never find getting there in the car very easy. Yes, there are brown English Heritage signs to direct you through the town, but on a couple of occasions ... more

1000 years of English History

Disadvantages: Might be better to visit nearer the summer season

...of times I've passed through Dover on my way to the continent. Passing through seemed to be the right thing to do, as it's perhaps not the most attractive of Kentish towns. DOVER is one of the busiest ports in England, which is not surprising as it's the closest point of the UK to mainland Europe. It's a bustling, transit town that at first glance has no real tourist attractions, and nothing to encourage the passing traveller to linger a while. But ...
...to you. * DOVER CASTLE * Because of it's strategic position as the gateway to England, there has been some sort of fortification here for many centuries. When the Romans occupied the country, they built an 80ft high lighthouse, constructed of the local flint, on the remains of an old iron age fort. It then fell to the Anglo-Saxons to make their mark and it's thought the site became a fortified town - the remains of the Roman lighthouse lie next to ...

Our Castle for Keeps

Advantages: Enjoyable day out, easy to get too, reasonable price
Disadvantages: Steep hills and the weather needs to be good

...live in the Town of Dover Kent I thought I would write a review on the castle and how it has become the Stronghold of England. It does make you instantly think of the White Cliffs, and cross Channel ferries ,but i feel the jewel of the town of Dover and personnally England is the magnificent Dover castle. Getting To The Castle. Obviously the castle is in Kent as I stated above and any further east in the south of England you would be in the Channel! ...
...on the Eastern hills of Dover can be seen upon approach into Dover via both these motorways. On foot, from the train Station or bus station it again is very well signposted and there is a bus which runs past the castle every 30 minutes which drops you off on the route to Deal ( neighbouring town) and runs back on the half hour too. Climbing up the hills is of course a strenuous exercise and you do need to be physically fit to be able to do this ...

Dover Castle - Worth A Visit

Advantages: Excellent condition castle, excellent museum
Disadvantages: It is in Dover

It would be interesting to see how the opening of the Channel tunnel has influenced attendance figures at Dover Castle. Now that so much cross-channel traffic starts to cross over some 15 miles before Dover it is likely a visit to Dover’s beautiful castle is not included on many holiday itineraries. That people no longer take the opportunity to visit the castle is a shame. Whilst in France travellers may visit many chateaux in France or Germany which are probably not as attractive as Dover’s castle. Dover Castle is similar in size and feel to Windsor Castle and the undulating ground and superb central area add to the impression. Set high above the white cliffs Dover castle dates back to the 11th century with the original defences built by Harold being strengthened by William the Conqueror. The superb keep and inner ...

Review of Dover in General

Dover Gateway to England

Advantages: Busy port. Shopping is reasonably good. White cliffs and Castle are attractive
Disadvantages: Lacks character

Bounded on one side by the Channel coastline and the famous White Cliffs,Dover in Kent is very much a maritime town. Throughout the ages this surprisingly small town has been the gateway into England from Continental Europe. For many Britons heading for holidays in Europe,Dover is the place to hurry through in order to board the ferry or hovercraft at the two passenger docks. Few have the time or even the inclination to explore the town. The well known landmarks of the White Cliffs and imposing Dover Castle located on a dramatic hill top setting blend well with the town's bustling port. You can enjoy a birds-eye-view of the busiest passenger port in the world from the Langdon Cliffs picnic site. The town itself frankly is not particularly distinguished. It is rather lacking in architectural character compared to the likes ...

Review of Dover (England)

Dover is more than just Ferries

Advantages: Great if you're trying to keep fit and good VFM.
Disadvantages: Gotta be fit and like lots of tunnels and stairs!

Say Dover to most people and they think of cross channel ferries, illegal immigrants, white cliffs etc. I want to tell you about Dover Castle, often overlooked, more people should take a day to discover it's charms. I am going to explain why I like it, so read on and learn! I entered Dover Castle through the traitors gate because I'm actually a member of The National Trust, and Dover Castle belongs to English Heritage so I had to pay to enter. However in Kent if one purchases a paper printed by the Kent Messenger group there are often reduced price tickets, so in this way at least I got in for half price. In my impression there are only two things in Dover worth their salt, one is the castle and the other is the port, the rest seems to be an almost deserted town and not worth further investigation unless you happen to be ...
