Advantages: Excellent condition castle, excellent museum Disadvantages: It is in Dover
It would be interesting to see how the opening of the Channel tunnel has influenced attendance figures at DoverCastle. Now that so much cross-channel traffic starts to cross over some 15 miles before Dover it is likely a visit to Dover’s beautiful castle is not included on many holiday itineraries.
That people no longer take the opportunity to visit the castle is a shame. Whilst in France travellers may visit many chateaux in France or Germany which are probably not as attractive as Dover’s castle.
DoverCastle is similar in size and feel to Windsor Castle and the undulating ground and superb central area add to the impression. Set high above the white cliffs Dovercastle dates back to the 11th century with the original defences built by Harold being strengthened by William the Conqueror. The superb keep and inner ...

The town itself frankly is not particularly distinguished. It is rather lacking in architectural character compared to the likes ...

Advantages: Great if you're trying to keep fit and good VFM. Disadvantages: Gotta be fit and like lots of tunnels and stairs!
Say Dover to most people and they think of cross channel ferries, illegal immigrants, white cliffs etc. I want to tell you about DoverCastle, often overlooked, more people should take a day to discover it's charms. I am going to explain why I like it, so read on and learn!
I entered DoverCastle through the traitors gate because I'm actually a member of The National Trust, and DoverCastle belongs to English Heritage so I had to pay to enter. However in Kent if one purchases a paper printed by the Kent Messenger group there are often reduced price tickets, so in this way at least I got in for half price.
In my impression there are only two things in Dover worth their salt, one is the castle and the other is the port, the rest seems to be an almost deserted town and not worth further investigation unless you happen to be ...
