GATEWAY TO ENGLAND WORTH A STOP (UPDATED)

Advantages: wonderful countryside almost in town; castle; compact centre
Disadvantages: disappointing architecture; shopping not great; not so easy to get to by public transport

As other reviewers remark, Dover is usually seen as just a ferry terminal. To me this is pretty weird, actually, as it is virtually impossible NOT TO notice the castle and the cliffs which are the main attractions.

I came to live in the town 12 months ago so I am still a fresh resident and still treat the place a bit like a tourist. This is the reason for my constant updating of this review as well, as I keep discovering new things! ...
...southern M25 in good traffic); Dover is surprisingly hard to get by public transport. Train from Waterloo East or Charing Cross takes about 2 hrs and costs 20 GBP for a day-return; a National Express coach takes over 3 hrs to Victoria at the cost of 11 GBP day return (this makes day return not terribly viable option).

If you are staying in Kent, there is plenty of local public transportation (bus and train) from the likes of Ashford, ... more

The gateway to Europe needs new fenceposts

Advantages: If you sucked all the people and shops out of it, it'd look nice
Disadvantages: Crime, drunks, no jobs, no investment, no shopping, no hope

...the risk of irking fellow Dover reviewers, you're best of trusting my review - I know pretty much every nook and cranny. Dover is known as the gateway to Europe. Does your house have it's own gate? Go look at it. The gateway area itself is usually pretty sparse - after all, all your asthetic efforts will go into what lies beyond the gate. The same applies to Dover. Sorry I couldn't hold your suspense about my opinion for longer, but as you will soon ...
...we go. HISTORY Dover has been well known and an integral part of Britain since the Romans. There are still Roman remains that can be seen from the Discovery Centre (more on that later), and of course, we have the Roman Painted House and Bronze Age Boat. Throughout every major conflict the UK has been in, Dover has been vastly important as a base, and as the first line of defense against invading Germans. Although saying that, my guess is that the ...

Castle in the Air

Advantages: Historic, breathtaking, a full day out
Disadvantages: Steep walks, quite tiring

Dover Castle is one of the countries - if not Europe’s - mightiest fortresses. It stands proudly upon the magnificent White Cliffs overlooking the sea and guarding the shortest crossing point between England and the rest of the European continent. The castle is a truly imposing site and has a very long and colourful history making for a very enjoyable and full day out. There is plenty to experience here as you explore the castle complex all ...
...Roman Lighthouse. Roman commanders developed Dover as a port in the first Century AD and the lighthouse was constructed as a guide to ships. An impressive structure which has certainly stood the test of time and remains one of the finest examples of Roman construction still standing in the UK. Next to the lighthouse is the Saxon Church dedicated to St Mary-in-Castro and dated about 1000 AD, it is typical in its construction in that it is cruciform ...

Dover Gateway to England

Advantages: Busy port. Shopping is reasonably good. White cliffs and Castle are attractive
Disadvantages: Lacks character

...the White Cliffs and imposing Dover Castle located on a dramatic hill top setting blend well with the town's bustling port. You can enjoy a birds-eye-view of the busiest passenger port in the world from the Langdon Cliffs picnic site. The town itself frankly is not particularly distinguished. It is rather lacking in architectural character compared to the likes of Canterbury, Rochester or nearby Sandwich. It does not have the Edwardian elegance ...

The surrounding countryside is most attractive and Dover can serve as a base for touring East Kent. Thanks very much for reading ! ...

Not just a port

Advantages: Plenty to see
Disadvantages: Traffic can be heavy

...merely seem to think of Dover as a port or a quick stop before catching the ferry, but if you take a moment to linger a little longer, you could be surprised. High above the town is the castle, which is well I think, worth a visit, underground passages are also open, with exhibitions relating to the war period. Down in the town is the White Cliffs Experience, with animated figures from Roman times up to the second World War telling you a little about ...

Samphire Hoe

Advantages: lots to see and do
Disadvantages: Can be chilly when its windy

Living in Dover me and my girlfriend visit Samphire Hoe a few times throughout the year to walk our dogs or just for a stroll around this site and the beach beyond. Samphire Hoe. The Hoe itself was made from 4.9 million cubic metres of chalk marl which was dug from the channel tunnel in its construction. The site is actually owned by Euro tunnel and is managed in partnership with the White Cliffs project. Inside Samphire Hoe, you can follow the pathed walks, look ay wildflowers, do a spot of birdwatching or fishing and there are also picnic areas dotted around the site. Gaining Entry. Entry to the Hoe is from the A20 motorway on the west bound carriage way to London. There is a well signposted slip road and when you reach this you have to stop at a set of traffic lights. These are in place purely as the single tunnel which ...

Our Castle for Keeps

Advantages: Enjoyable day out, easy to get too, reasonable price
Disadvantages: Steep hills and the weather needs to be good

As I live in the Town of Dover Kent I thought I would write a review on the castle and how it has become the Stronghold of England. It does make you instantly think of the White Cliffs, and cross Channel ferries ,but i feel the jewel of the town of Dover and personnally England is the magnificent Dover castle. Getting To The Castle. Obviously the castle is in Kent as I stated above and any further east in the south of England you would be in the Channel! The castle can be reached both from the A2 motorway and the M20 Motorway which are the main vein of motorways in Kent. It is very well signposted, and of course as its set on the Eastern hills of Dover can be seen upon approach into Dover via both these motorways. On foot, from the train Station or bus station it again is very well signposted and there is a bus which runs past ...

WAY TO CROSS No.1 - HOVERSPEED - R.I.P.

Advantages: My Favourite Way To Cross. Service. Cut Queuing. Fast.
Disadvantages: NO LONGER SAILING!

a particularly comfortable way to cross - it was comparatively fast compared to the much slower conventional ferries of the day though. The thrill of travelling on that huge air cushioned and very noisy beast had far more to do with the technology of it all than the advertised "first class levels" of comfort and service. Those hovercraft were very sensitive to sea conditions and required a lot of maintenance, neither factor helping the reliability or in the end the popularity of the service. Dover being the closest point in England to France, via Calais, there has always, throughout the centuries of history, been a demand there for a sea crossings. However, it was not until the mid 1960's that English people generally had the means or inclination to holiday abroad. The "jet-age" changed that, along with the dawning of better cars and roads to ...
