In the words of the musical Chicago…………..”give ‘em the old razzel dazzle” – Dover St certainly does this!

My first experience of this restaurant was nearly two years ago. My boyfriend took me here on a Wednesday evening and the night was a classic that belonged to a movie scene. This is one of the few places that you can have a romantic meal, whilst enjoying the live music of a 3-piece band and then dance the night away until 3am!

The setting of this Restaurant is in keeping with what you would expect from an establishment in the heart of Mayfair. Made up of 3 rooms, the decor consists of clean lines and wood panelling, tasteful (if not a bit bland) and the Clientele sophisticated, though if not somewhat pretentious.

The age range is 25+, at the weekends you can come here just for the dancing (subject to music cover charges). I have to point out though that the DJ does get a bit “pop-tastic” on a Saturday night!

Anyway, now onto the important things!

Drinks
Expect to pay £14.00 for the house white, special wines can be ordered with 3 days notice. Champagne prices range from house Champagne at £35.00 to a bottle of Cristal at £180.00.

Food
A range of French and Mediterranean cuisine, the food is of a good standard and I have always been impressed, though I have to say, I have spoken to people who take the view that the food is pretty standard – but that’s just another opinion!

The starters range from £5.25 for pan fried Salmon Cake - £16.95 for Coquilles St Jaques (King Scallops). I had the King prawns flamed in Brandy with Lobster sauce (£9.95). My boyfriend had the Asparagus Hollundaise £6.75. The scallops looked divine….I will definitely be ordering that next time I go!

Mains range from £12.95 for Seafood Fettuchini/ Spinach and Ricotta Tortelloni – £17.95 for Fillet of Beed Rossini. My favourite dish here so far is the Conard a l’orange, which is Pot Roast Duck.

Expect a 2-course meal with a bottle of house wine to amount to around £70.00 for two people, however, if you register with Visit London, you get two courses from the A La Carte plus ½ bottle of wine for £24.95 pp! This offer ends 22 November 2004 so hurry or you’ll miss it!

Service
The staff are attentive if not a bit busy. Also, I dined on a Saturday night and the only tables available were on the dance-floor, which meant vacating the table by 10pm. I recommend booking up to two weeks in advance and getting a late table (not on the dance-floor). That way, you have somewhere to sit throughout the night.

Basically, in short, don’t take it too seriously; this place is a good introduction to the sound of jazz, the joys of good food and dancing till late. If you’re going to visit London, then head for Dover St as it’s near the main attractions such as Buckingham Palace and Piccadilly Circus.
