Dover is more than just Ferries

Advantages: Great if you're trying to keep fit and good VFM.
Disadvantages: Gotta be fit and like lots of tunnels and stairs!

Say Dover to most people and they think of cross channel ferries, illegal immigrants, white cliffs etc. I want to tell you about Dover Castle, often overlooked, more people should take a day to discover it's charms. I am going to explain why I like it, so read on and learn!

I entered Dover Castle through the traitors gate because I'm actually a member of The National Trust, and Dover Castle belongs to English Heritage so I had to pay ...
...are only two things in Dover worth their salt, one is the castle and the other is the port, the rest seems to be an almost deserted town and not worth further investigation unless you happen to be a refugee or asylum seeker!! However to visit the castle you should allow a full day, unless you happen to be an Olympic athlete, as the walking is immense and hilly.

The castle is located on the top of the famous White Cliffs of Dover, above ... more

Dover Castle - Worth A Visit

Advantages: Excellent condition castle, excellent museum
Disadvantages: It is in Dover

...has influenced attendance figures at Dover Castle. Now that so much cross-channel traffic starts to cross over some 15 miles before Dover it is likely a visit to Dover’s beautiful castle is not included on many holiday itineraries. That people no longer take the opportunity to visit the castle is a shame. Whilst in France travellers may visit many chateaux in France or Germany which are probably not as attractive as Dover’s castle. ...
...high above the white cliffs Dover castle dates back to the 11th century with the original defences built by Harold being strengthened by William the Conqueror. The superb keep and inner buildings were completed by the late 12th century and a large amount of the original castle remains to this day. The strategic position of the castle at the narrowest part of the English Channel is recognised by its use a command post in World War 2. It was from ...

Not just a ferry terminal

Advantages: Very interest, Plenty for the kids
Disadvantages: none

...devoted to the history of Dover with exhibitions dating back to pre-Roman times. An iron age boat which has been recovered from a nearby river is a relic of Dovers long association with the sea. The museum includes an excellent section on the role played by Dover in the second world war. This theme is also part of the main attraction for the imposing Castle which looks out across the Channel from its imposing position high on the cliffs. One of the ...

Stop Over Town

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Dover is not the place to spend a two week summer holiday however if you are travelling in or out of Europe and need a stop-over destination then it offers all you need. A good range of Hotels and B&B exist for the short stay visitor. I found the local travel office, situated close to the port very helpful. The local Pubs and Inns offer bar meals and some have restaurants catering for all ages. The food prices vary so it's worth checking out a few ...

1000 years of English History

Advantages: More history than you can point a spear at
Disadvantages: Might be better to visit nearer the summer season

times when I imagine it's quite crowded, I think you could easily spend the best part of a day. I would also suggest buying the guide book at the entrance. Although you are given a map and small guide with your ticket, the guide book is a wealth of information and brings the site alive. Well worth £2.99. In conclusion, I was mightily impressed with Dover castle. The condition of the structure is excellent, and I learned quite a bit about English history in general, and Dover's history in particular. Highly recommended. Thanks for reading, ©proxam2004 ...

Review of Dover Castle

GATEWAY TO ENGLAND WORTH A STOP (UPDATED)

Advantages: wonderful countryside almost in town; castle; compact centre
Disadvantages: disappointing architecture; shopping not great; not so easy to get to by public transport

/seasonal shop; almost no children articles which I find very annoying as there is distinct lack of children's clothes stores in Dover generally. SUMMARY Overall, Dover has definitely grown on me and I would recommend it for a 1-2 day trip to visitors who are: (1) interested in historical sights - those should head straight to the castle + museum + Western Hights AND/OR (2) like spectacular coastal/clifftop walks (cliffs on both sides of the town, possibly Western Heights). A day trip to the continent can be also incorporated (from 15 GBP per car+people; from 1 GBP per foot passanger). ...
