It would be interesting to see how the opening of the Channel tunnel has influenced attendance figures at Dover Castle. Now that so much cross-channel traffic starts to cross over some 15 miles before Dover it is likely a visit to Dover’s beautiful castle is not included on many holiday itineraries.
That people no longer take the opportunity to visit the castle is a shame. Whilst in France travellers may visit many chateaux in France or Germany which are probably not as attractive as Dover’s castle.
Dover Castle is similar in size and feel to Windsor Castle and the undulating ground and superb central area add to the impression. Set high above the white cliffs Dover castle dates back to the 11th century with the original defences built by Harold being strengthened by William the Conqueror. The superb keep and inner buildings were completed by the late 12th century and a large amount of the original castle remains to this day.
The strategic position of the castle at the narrowest part of the English Channel is recognised by its use a command post in World War 2. It was from the castle that the evacuation of allied forces from Dunkirk was co-ordinated and it is now possible to visit the labyrinth of tunnels and reconstructed operations centres as part of the admission at the castle. Many of the tunnels had been started as early as the late 18th century at a time when the threat was expected to be from Napoleon and the French.
Dover castle is a lovely place to visit. In addition to the castle and tunnels there are extensive grounds and there are views across the Channel and the town of Dover itself. If you intend crossing the Channel this year I would recommend you add a half day visit to Dover Castle.

Very interesting info, you know your stuff. I live in Dover, its not the greatest place to live, but I happen to live in the nicer out of town area! Dover is only really known for the ferries, as you may know the town is awful for shops so not many visit apart from the americans and french. Nice to know you like the Museum, have you seen the Bronze age boat? Anyway, good op. Sav90

Advantages: wonderful countryside almost in town; castle; compact centre Disadvantages: disappointing architecture; shopping not great; not so easy to get to by public transport
