Dresden is a strange city. It was practically bombed flat in the war, and as a result, like many Eastern European cities, it doesn't quite fit together aesthetically. One of the main points of interest is the Frauenkirche that was completely destroyed, and that is now being rebuilt brick for brick exactly as it was. They are receiving no funding for this from the 'rebuilding funds' that exist in the East, so it is all being done by donations. That's impressive to see, as is the enormous opera building and the museum of art.
If you go, don't be upset by the building site that is around the railway station. The way into the city centre from the station isn't pretty, but don't be put off.
The night life is quite good, but only if you're already there.
I wasn't enormously impressed with Dresden. The rebuilding done following the reunification of Germany is coming along at a rapid rate, and much more will have been completed now than had been when I went at various intervals throughout 1999/2000. If you're in that area on your way around Eastern Europe, it's definitely worth a bit of a diversion to see if you have a particular interest in architecture or churches, but otherwise there's nothing that would get me back there that I couldn't appreciate equally well in pictures of Dresden.
