Drummohr Lodges, Edinburgh

We decided on Drummohr Lodges as we thought it looked nice and was also not far from Edinburgh which we wanted to visit. Plus, some of the lodges also had hot tubs! So we booked a Mon - Fri break.

I came across Drummohr Lodges while browsing through the Hoseasons brochure last year. I was looking for somewhere new to visit for a short break with my partner for his birthday in November, and having stayed in a few Hoseasons holiday parks previously and always finding them to be really nice, I didn't really want to look elsewhere.

We do like to stay in lodges, preferably ones with hot tubs! So this was a particular requirement when looking through the various holiday parks in the brochure.
We decided on Drummohr Lodges as we thought it looked nice and was also not far from Edinburgh which we wanted to visit. Plus, some of the lodges also had hot tubs! So we booked a Mon - Fri break.

We drove up the A1 from Newcastle and the park was very easy to find following the directions provided on the booking form.
We arrived earlier than the check-in time of 4pm, and the park seemed very quiet, but bearing in mind it is a camping and caravan park and this was November, so it was out of season.
There was a bungalow to the left, after we drove through the barrier and a small reception area with a shop.
A man came out of the bungalow after seeing us drive in. We gave our names, he explained he was the park manager and he told us to follow him, and he would take us to our lodge. We drove along a gravel road to the bottom of the park, where the lodges are located.

It is then you realise the park and lodges are situated on a hill which gives a good view of the Firth of Forth. Our lodge was on the end of a row.
We went inside, and were shown how everything worked. He was very friendly, and explained that although the touring part of the park was closed for winter, the lodges are open all year round and were currently all occupied.

We asked a few questions about the surrounding area and places to eat etc and he was very helpul. He explained there is a regular bus service to Edinburgh if we didn't wish to drive, and it takes around 30 mins to get there. The nearby village of Prestonpans was only a couple of minutes drive and had takeaways and a supermarket. We were hoping there might be a nice pub/ restaurant, but he couldn't recommend one, which was a bit disappointing, and we got the feeling he was trying to tell us it wasn't very nice there!
Musselburgh was a little further away and we were told there were one or two nice pubs there as well as takeaways.
If you like walking you can follow the John Muir Way from Musselburgh to Dunbar, and golfers will be spoilt for choice as there are a few courses in the area.

The lodge itself was very nice, quite spacious, and cleaned to a high standard throughout. It was very warm when we entered as the cleaners had put the heating on and turned on the lamps, which made it very welcoming and cosy.
The lounge/dining room/kitchen was open plan, with a sofa, two armchairs, coffee table, flat screen TV and DVD player.
There was a dining table and chairs and fitted kitchen with oven/hob, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, fridge. Plenty of pans, cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery and glassware were provided, along with some tea bags, coffee, dishwasher tablets and a tea towel.
There were two bedrooms, one double and one twin with pine furniture. The beds were made up ready for us, and were very comfortable. Each bedroom had its own ensuite bathroom. One bathroom had a bath with overhead shower, the other had a shower. Everything was immaculate, so couldn't ask for more.
Larger lodges are avavilable which sleep 6, but not all lodges have hot tubs. The ones that do, are known as Drummohr Plus lodges.

Patio doors led from the lounge onto the verandah which had a lovely view of the Firth of Forth.
We were expecting the hot tub to be on the verandah as this is where they usually are situated in our experience, so we were surprised to find a separate gazebo/hut-type building at the end of the verandah.
Opening the door, we walked in to find a large 4-5 person hot tub, housed in it's own little hut! There were sliding wooden panels for windows all the way round, which you could open to let in the light and air. Or if you prefer to leave them closed there were spotlights on the ceiling which you could turn on. It did look really cosy with the spotlights on and quite romantic!
We did use the hot tub each evening and it was really nice in the hot bubbling water with a glass of wine. It was certainly the highlight of our holiday!

Gas and electricity is included, so there are no separate charges apart from hire charges for cots and highchairs, which are around £10 per week.

We had a nice relaxing stay at Drummohr which is exactly what we wanted. It was very peaceful and cosy, although it is probably much more lively in the summer months!
We did visit the nearby village one evening and were a little disappointed as there didn't seem to be anywhere to go for a meal. We didn't fancy driving further afield into Musselburgh that particular evening so we bought some food at the supermarket and cooked it in the lodge.
This was the only downside to our stay, as it is nice to stay somewhere where there are some nice pub-restaurants or places to eat which are not too far away or within walking distance, but to be honest it did look a little run down. So bear in mind you do have to travel a little further afield to Musselburgh to find some decent restaurants and bars.
We did also drive to Edinburgh and had a lovely day there, but to be honest we were quite happy spending our evenings in the lodge, and the hot tub! I had to drag myself out of it as it was so relaxing!

I would recommend Drummohr as a good place to visit for a short break to chill out and relax, and would go back again. It's just a shame the surrounding area isn't as nice, but it didn't bother us too much as we still had a lovely, quiet relaxing break, with a nice view from our lodge.
We did have a minor problem with the key getting stuck in the patio doors one afternoon, but after a call to reception, the manager came right away and sorted it out for us.

We paid £170 for a Mon-Fri break in November last year, which I think is very reasonable. The price obviously fluctuates according to the time of year. I booked online at Hoseasons.co.uk. I did not include the holiday insurance they offer as had my own, so make sure if you book and don't want this, to omit it. You can also omit the cancellation insurance if you wish. If you book via a cashback site such as Topcashback you can also receive a little cashback. I received over £8 back.

Although the surrounding area wasn't too good, it is an ideal base to explore further afield and the site itself and accomodation I cannot fault, therefore I am awarding Drummohr 5 stars as the site, lodge, hot tub and service from the manager was excellent.
