For me there is one reason, and one reason only, for visitting Dublin. It is, of course, the Guiness!
There are dozens of reasons adduced as to why it tastes so much better over THERE than over HERE ( I live in London).
1. The water, always a key ingredient, has a special chemical structure in Dublin. It is said to be softer. 2. The turnover is higher so the product is fresher. 3. The pipes are cleaned out more frequently, probably again because of higher turnover. 4. The local would not tolerate anything being watered down? 5. The Guinness factory is sitiated in Dublin, and Guiness is not a product which travels well. 6. It is poured more slowly and aloowed to settle for the appropriate period of time before being served.
Whatever the reasons may be, there is no question that the pint one gets in Dublin is richer in flavour and velvetty thicker in texture than anything I've had in London.
It is perfect with local oysters on the half shell. Or with Irish stew. Or the extraordinary cheeses of the emerald isle. Or even with rich chocolate desserts!
The only problem: the Irish economy is growing at such phenomenal speed, you may pay a few more pence for your pint. But a little goes a longer way in Dublin!
