As it is nearly St. Patrick's Day, I thought I would share with you my memories of an extremely short trip to Dublin!!
I had wanted to go to Dublin for some time, but as I am not a lover of boats, and the crossing isn't exactly one of the smoothest, I had never been.
Nearly 5 years ago, we went to North Wales with some friends of ours, and the weather was glorius, so we went to the Docks at Holyhead (abysmal place) on Anglesey, checked the shipping/weather forecast and as all was well, we booked ourselves onto the ferry that night as foot passengers. It cost us £7 each and the dog went for free - she even had a proper kennel on the ship with water and bedding provided. We went back to the caravan for some sleep as it was leaving at about 2am the following morning and we had to allow time to drive there, park and get on board.
All was well, as we went over the Menai bridge, the police were stopping all cars going in the direction of the docks and searching inside the car and also with the long mirror things on the underneath of the car (a really bad bombing had not long occured in Ireland, can't remember the name now).
We parked in the car park and went the the office to book in, and then we walked on board. The minute we got on, we were guided towards a security area and a bit of a body search followed plus the poor dog had to stand on a vet like table and be checked over too - poor thing thought she was at the vet and piddled all over the table - ha!!!
After all that, we went on the ship (The Pride of Innesfree) and we had a very enjoyble journey. We had a lovely breakfast on the ship and coffee and watched the glorius sun rise. We docked at Dun Laoghaire which is the next Port to Dublin.
After a short bus journey to Dublin City, it was about 7.30 in the morning and we were pretty tired. We saton a park bench in the sunshine and we dropped off. We must have looked like a pair of drunks with a dog.
Amazingly, all the locals were making such a fuss of Copper. She is a Copper coloured Border Collie, which is quite an unusual colour anyway, but in Dublin and the surrounding area, believe it or not, dogs are not common.
We had a walk along the River Liffey. I was amazed to see how wide it was, especially where it emptied into the sea. The traffic along the road was so busy, everybody trying to get around.
We were a bit limited where we could go because of the dog. We had a good walk around the shopping area (I thought generally things seemed quite expensive to buy). We walked around the residential part of the town and found ourselves at the Guinness Museum. We had our photo taken outside the huge old foundry gates that are still used today. I looked around the museum outside and hubby went into the part where you taste the guiness. He said it seemed so different to what you would get in the pub normally, he said it was so lovely. He dare not have too much due to driving home again to the caravan.
We went back to the ferry about 6pm in the evening and we had a snooze on the way back. It was a long and tiring day, but well worth it. Would recommend it to anybody.
One funny story, was that about 2 years afterwards, somebody cloned my husbands credit card details and made a new card. They went on a shopping spree in Leicester, on a French ferry and the very same ferry that we travelled on to Ireland. When you use a credit card on a ferry, the details are not transferred to the main computer until it docks, by which time it is too late for the retailer to know that the card has been stopped. Luckily the insurance covered the purchases made by whoever had done it.

A really helpful op. I think you would have looked a right sight fast asleep on that bench. Poor things having to be pulled over by the authorities/officials.

What a funny review. Your poor dog, hope she was ok. I have been to Dublin for a weekend break and is a beautiful city

Good write up. Just the right level of detail that I like to see before going somewhere.
