Advantages: Great bars and shops
Disadvantages: Quite crowded

Having visted the Altstadt on more than one occasion over the last few years (My dad lived in Germany) I have not had a bad experience of it. Situated near the Rhine, it is a glorious array of cafes and shops. Best experience has to be when we went for a delicious meal (sorry, can't remember name of restaurant) then found our way into the bars. ...comfortable and at ease all night, especially when we moved on to a club and danced the night away to a variety of European music. More recently we went to a Xmas market near the Alstadt which I must recommend, wrap up warm and weave your way round the wonderfully decorated stalls whilst supping Gluvine (spelling?)
