Dusseldorf is one of the most attractive and upmarket cities in Germany. Partly this is because of the international makeup of the city. Many firms, in particular Japanese firms have made Dusseldorf their European base, and this toghther with the international Messe(trading fair)provides a very international outlook. Not being able to speak german is not a disadvantage as much as in other german cities, with most people in shops, resturants and civil officals speaking at least passable english. Possibly the two greatest attractions in dusseldorf are the Altstadt(old city) and the Konigssalle ... more

There is a wide selecion of pubs in dusseldorf so I will only recommend a few of the best. To begin with I will recommend a few pubs in the altstadt. The first is McLaughlins Irish Pub. This is widely regarded as the premium Irish pub in Dusseldorf. This is partly because of the wide selsection of nationalities of the pubs customers. it is easy here to walk in and immediatley find someone to talk about, usually in english. The staff here are very friendly, and the owner Tom is alwaays ready to welcome visitors to dusseldorf and give them a few tips of whats on. Every Thursday here is a student ... more

The cheapest club of any quality in Dusseldorf is Sub which is located in the Altstadt. This club only costs 5dm(1.70 pounds)to get in and then provides well priced drinks. A large cocktail for example costs about DM 14 which is less than five pounds, while a glass of draught beer(0.3 litre) costs about DM 3.50 which is about 1.15 pounds. A large advantage is that there is waiter service so you don't have to spend a long time waiting for a drink. The music here is varied with hip hop and house/trance the main components, although these are mostly commercial tracks. The club is well worth a ... more

The standard and price of resturants in dusseldorf varies greatly, so I have decided to split this section in two, with recommendations for business travellers and for those on a tighter budjet. Firstly for business travellers, there are two Italian resturants that i would highly recommend. The first is La Terraza which is located looking over the Konigsalle providing a very nice view. The menu here is some what limited and the food expensive, but the quality and view make this well worth a visit. The second resutrant is Rossini which is located on the tram line number U79 at the stop ... more

Advantages Advantages Welcoming to young people, lots to do, welcoming to English people

Disadvantages Disadvantages very big and possibly confusing at times

When I visited Duesseldorf I went because I had a German friend who lived there. Being 17 I was able to take advantage of the lower pub entry age to that of England which was great for socialising in the evening's with his friends. The accomodation I stayed in was a youth hostel on the west side of the river Rhine, just across the water from the main part of Duesseldorf. Not only was the accomodation cheap but also no more than a 20min walk from the main centre of the city. Duesseldorf has a large number of Turkish people living there which means that there is a lot of Turkish influence in the ... more
