When I visited Duesseldorf I went because I had a German friend who lived there. Being 17 I was able to take advantage of the lower pub entry age to that of England which was great for socialising in the evening's with his friends. The accomodation I stayed in was a youth hostel on the west side of the river Rhine, just across the water from the main part of Duesseldorf. Not only was the accomodation cheap but also no more than a 20min walk from the main centre of the city.
Duesseldorf has a large number of Turkish people living there which means that there is a lot of Turkish influence in the city, none more so than in the food as there are many "Doenar" shops selling authentic Turkish food.
The best thing for myself would have to be the fact that i was able to go into the "altstadt" in the evening, where most of the pubs and clubs are, and be able to actually drink alcohol! I know this is not unique to Germany but the atmosphere in the city was welcoming and meant I never felt intimidated.
As well as this there were plenty of places to shop from clothes to electronical equipment and a lot of what you would call 'culture' with statues and huge buildings etc. The TV tower in Germany which stands tall of all around it was in view from the window of the room i was staying in. This tower tells the time via a system of lights, which sadly i did not work out but was told by my friend this was the case!
