Advantages: Location Disadvantages: Rude staff, tired decor, poor value for money.
I stayed at the Duxton Hotel in Wellington in February this year following the wedding reception of my sister in law. The reception was held in the hotel so we decided that it would be far easier to stay over afterwards.
The hotel is located on the sea front and you have amazing views (if you are in the front half of the hotel) of Wellington Harbour.
You arrive at the hotel and your car is taken away by a valet to be ... ...is a luxury hotel.
You would be mistaken though - the reception staff do not grace you with a smile - they are straight faced and unwelcoming, serving you as if you are doing them a favour by staying there.
We were given the key to our room which was, at least clean and tidy, although there were hairs in the shower area that belonged to the cleaner/ previous guest - who knows?

You arrive at the hotel and your car is taken away by a valet to be parked somewhere - so far so good you think- this is a luxury hotel.

The decor was tired and despite requesting a double room we were given a twin.
The room had the majority of extras that you would expect - tea and coffee with fresh milk in the fridge (a definite plus). However the TV was tiny and only showed about 3 channels. The beds were too soft and had very old bedding on them.
The reception was fine and it was nice to find that the hotel had turned down the beds and provided good night chocolate mints.
Breakfast was included in the hotel room hire and we expected good things. We were very mistaken - breakfast is supposed to be served until 10.30 on Sundays - we were there at 09.15 and there was virtually nothing left.
Dried up baked beans and somthing that perhaps could once have been scrambled eggs (I am not sure).
We asked for more fruit and were told that it had run out already.
Getting coffee from the surly breakfast staff was interesting - they again do not smile and take about 15 minutes to arrive with a jug of coffee. Heaven forbid that you ask for a second cup!
After breakfast checked out - imagine my horror when I was charged $285 New Zealand Dollars for the luxury - this is around £140 at the moment.
For this I would expect decent service and friendly staff - neither of which I got!
I would not recommend this place - it has delusions about the level of its grandour, unfriendly staff and is definitely worth the steep price tag!
