...on the East Anglian site began. By the end of the first season they had idenified the mounds as being Anglo-Saxon, had excavated three of them at length and found one to contain a ship burial. This was ground breaking stuff. Not only was Anglo-Saxon archaeology very rare, especially at the early date that this site suggested, a ship burial was a very rare thing indeed, the site must be connected with someone of great importance.
Over the years three major excavations have taken place and the site has been examined to a degree that many sites never get subjected too. The story of the people involved in the various digs and the evolution of archaeology is fascinating enough, but the real star of the show is the ship burial itself. ...Cyprus is one of the best places to visit if you like exploring archaeological sites and ruins. After a recent visit to the island, I have decided to write about a few of these places. At the top of my list is the Tombs of the Kings.
Tombs of the kings is a huge ancient cemetery in Paphos. Despite the name, the Tombs of the Kings was never used for royal burials. Instead, rich citizens were laid to rest in the site. Tombs of the Kings is named so because of the impressive appearance of the tombs. The area was used for burials during the Hellenistic and Roman times.
