...is the Lindisfarne Hotel - a warm, welcoming hotel, privately owned and family run, it does some great afternoon teas, the hot chocolate being a particular favourite - an ideal place for granny to get her breath back. Slightly further on, a large unsightly hut looms into view - a cafe catering for the dozens of coach parties that descend upon the island. Decision time. Down the picturesque narrow street to the castle and harbour? Right, to the island post office, or head along to the Village Square? Lets head right, past the Lindisfarne Heritage Centre (home to an electronic version of the Lindisfarne Gospels, now 'owned' by the British Museum after their removal/theft from the island). Advantages: Peaceful, relatively remote, great scenery, plenty to see and do.
Disadvantages: Weather can be iffy (as with most of Britain), infamous Scottish midges.

...was £70. The official Caledonian MacBrayne website www.calmac.co.uk lists the current timetables in detail. It should be noted that out of season, the ferries are generally slightly less frequent, than during the normal holiday season. If you intend to go hiking or exploring for that matter, particularly in the hills, you will probably be better purchasing the Ordnance Survey Landranger Series maps. The Island area is covered by 3 of these maps, all produced by the Ordnance Survey and available at good book shops throughout the UK. Advantages: Easy to reach, lush, lots to do, relaxing pace, great food

...be around $7.50 with a pint of beer around $6.00. We did also eat a few meals where the cost was around $100 each, including wine, however one in particular, the Lido Restaurant at elbow Beach Resort offered outstanding food and service and again that price would compare favourably with a similar restaurant in the UK. Places you should certainly try and see include: Swizzle Inn, Henry VIII Pub and Restaurant, Lido Restaurant, Café Cairo, The Spot, and try the White Horse Tavern in St Georges for the Bermuda Onion starter - not to be missed! Places to Visit ----------------- The island is not particularly large and is broken into nine separate parishes, plus the City of Hamilton (confusingly NOT in the Parish of Hamilton…!)
