We booked our holiday to Turkey back in March and when we looked at airports to leave from I saw that East Midlands was on the list and as it is only 15 minutes down the road, and easier for us to access than Birmingham or Manchester, I thought I would give it a go. The other added bonus was the fact that I could leave my car at my dad's and he could drive us to the airport and pick us up when we got home.
The airport is easily accessible from the M1, A6, and a52 and is close to both Nottingham and Derby and is almost in the centre of the country.
We arrived at the airport at just after 7am. Our flight was due to leave at 10am, but we had been advised to arrive more than two hours before because of the increased security checks that were making check in a little longer since the terrorist attcks on September 11th. We stood in the JMC check in queue and didn't have to wait long before our luggage had been checked in and we had our boarding passes and were free to head off for a coffee and watch other flights landing and taking off in the observation area. The staff were very polite and explained everything very well. They were through in terms of security and very reassuring.
The observation area is next to the cafe area, which is great as the kids can watch planes taking off and landing and you can have a coffee and read your paper. I would have liked to see something else for the kids in this area, perhaps a large TV screen playing cartoons like the one in the departure lounge, but the wait wasn't too fraught considering i had an 8 year old and an 11 year old with me.
We were called to the departure lounge at about 8.30am and this was much more comfortable and the kids were kept quiet by the large cartoon screen and play area and the fact that they could actually see our plane being loaded.
The departure lounge was comfortable, with several duty free shops and a large coffee shop/restaurant. We were called at about 9.20am and they got us all on the plane very quickly.
This airport is much smaller than some of England's other airports, but this adds to it's appeal because it is more personal and the service is much nicer. You feel much calmer and less stressed when you finally board the plane.
A good experience and I will certainly travel from East Midlands again. I would like to see them develop more things for children to do. There are plenty of shops (eg. WH Smiths, Boots) and cafes and restaurants. A good start to our holiday.
