So for the first time ever I was going to fly and boy was I worried. You see littlemissy and I were off to Paris and we were using Easyjet to get there. Now as you may understand as a first time flyer I was a little nervous to say the least. This was partially due to my fear of heights and the idea of being aloft at 29,000 ft in a pressurised metal can for an extended period. So swallowing my fear and grabbing our bags we left for the airport.

Our departure point for this extravaganza (or fearfest in my case) was Liverpool John Lennon Airport, and after being dropped off by littlemissy’s father we strolled intrepidly in (MEEP!!!). Easily sign posted was our registering point and we headed over to deposit our luggage. As we had arrived two hours before (as stated on the website) we were able to get the bags stowed quite quickly. However this point is where, for me, reality and my imagination went in different directions.

Morts Imagination:

a) Littlemissy and I would go to the desk and hand our solitary large bag in. In return Easyjet would gives us our tickets with our seat numbers and we would be off to Gay Paree.
b) Or else they would tell us sorry but we don’t have any tickets under our names and to please sod off. (Can you guess that I have never seen Airline?)

Reality:

We waited for a short period of time until the bored looking check-in clerk could to check us in and look at our passports (a worrying moment for me as my passport photo made me look like a terrorist). Once our bag was deposited we were given two laminated pieces of plastic with the numbers 25 & 26 on them (Huh?). So walking away looking slightly confused and knowing we had an hour to kill before we could board we headed for a bar.

Briefly stopping before a (much needed drink) we perused those pieces of laminated cardboard that Miss Boredom had provided us with. It turns out that Easyjet runs a free for all service on their flights. The passengers are grouped into numbered batches of 1-30, 31-60, 61-90, 90+. Your seats are not booked and it is apparently handbags at dawn to get the seats.

As you may guess this did not ease my mind at all and my urge for copious amounts of alcohol was heightened quite dramatically. So we headed at a sharpish pace towards the airport bar. With an hour to kill and a pint of lager in my hand littlemissy was able to ease my anxiety a little. However her efforts were dissuaded by the sight of a Boeing 737 taking off at, what looked to me, an incredibly steep angle. For some strange reason my pint glass became empty very quickly at this point so I got a refill. With a fresh pint and a concerned girlfriend I muddled my way through the next twenty minutes by sipping my pint and not looking out of the big window in front of me.

Finally with just over forty minutes to go we headed down to the departure lounge and through the security checkpoint. This was just like I imagined it. I dumped all the bits out of my pockets into a tray (The amount of junk in my pockets though surprised my other half though) walked through the metal and promptly set it off. After an extensive pat down by security personnel it was discovered that the item causing the beeps to go off was my steel toecapped Dr Martins not some hidden weapon of mass destruction. So once again all my calming efforts had been neutralised and my nerves started to become fraught again.

So smoking like a chimney and strutting like a peacock I waited (badly) watched in secret amusement (I believe) by littlemissy. Finally after ten minutes of waiting the call came and I headed towards my doom. As we left the departure lounge and walked out to the aircraft I was surprised at how small it actually was. This thing cannot possibly get us off the ground, can it? My fear had increased! My senses were being overloaded! It was all I could do to actually go up the steps onto the plane.

Finally I am in the belly of the beast, again its smaller than I expected in an orange and cream décor that does not really look that nice at all even if it is the corporate image Easyjet projects. Thanks to a request I made my littlemissy lets me sit in a window seat. Now that may seem odd but even though I am scared out of my mind by what I am about to do I need to see what is going on. So I have a comfy seat and a wonderful young lady holding my hand as we wait for the journey to start. Then the emergency demonstration happens and I really think at that point that a certain person upstairs is a born sadist. So I close my eyes and breathe in slowly and deeply to calm myself and then the plane starts moving. It’s at this point I nearly run down the aisle screaming maniacally and jump out of the plane onto the tarmac. The only thing stopping me is a gentle touch and the calm voice of my beloved. Without her this tin can would not have held me.

Suddenly the plane stops! Is something wrong? Are we going to turn back? Am I wearing clean underwear? All these thoughts and more flew threw my mind and then BOOM!!! At a speed I could not comprehend the Boeing 737 was moving towards my moment of truth. In a blink, during my horrified gaze out of the window, we were airborne and the further from the ground we got the less my fear held me until finally it was gone! As was my air travel virginity. In an hour I would be in Paris! But that is a tale for another day.

Easyjet is budget travel service with easy (it’s a cliché I know) means of booking your tickets. You just call up their hotline or access their website. They are listed at the end of the opinion.

However here are a couple of pointers on travelling Easyjet.

1) You are only allowed 25kg/50lbs of hold luggage and 5kg/10lbs of hand luggage per person so its always an idea to leave a bit of spare space in your bags for the bits you know you will bring back. They do only charge £1 per extra kilo though.

2) Make sure there is nothing sharp in your bag. It will be discovered and confiscated.

3) If you want to get a window seat or be sitting next to your partner/family member get there for two hours before so you are in the first or second group of 30. You will get called by group and it makes grouping together easier.

4) Unless you are exorbitantly well off do not buy food and drinks on the plane. Littlemissy and I were charged £1.80 for a chunky Kit Kat and two mini cans of Pepsi Max. It is a little bit exorbitant wouldn’t you agree?

The price littlemissy and I paid for our tickets to Paris was £22.50 plus tax (each) and our returns were even cheaper. All in all Easyjet offers an excellent service bar their colour scheme and their costly snacks.

Hotline No: I haven’t got it at the moment
