How many of us have thought of flying Air India to Toronto? Kuwait Airways or El Al to New York ..? Aeroflot to Australia ..? Its not just the "big boys" such as BA or Virgin that fly to these destinations and hundreds of other places.
The advantage of flying less well known airlines to very well known destinations are price, more availability at peak times and not least, lots more space to stretch out (most of the time).
Researching different airlines on popular routes is time consuming and a lot of hassle so my advice is to find yourself a good old fashioned travel agent, you know the sort, cup of coffee on the desk and a battered old airline route guide to hand. Access to computerised airline reservation systems is an added bonus and will save them phone calls to the individual airlines concerned to check availability. These guys can tell you if Air India is making a stopover in Rome en route to Bombay or how about flying Kuwait Airways to Geneva ..? Much nicer to stretch out on a Boeing 747 than sit on a cramped charter flight .. even just for a couple of hours. Fares are nearly always cheaper too ...!
Someone I know recently flew London to New York with Air France. His well known High Street travel agent had advised that Air France were the cheapest. What she didn't tell him (or didn't know) was that he'd have to change in Paris and wait around for 3 hours for a connection ..! Common sense you may think but most of us would expect travel agents to know more than we do .. right ..? Don't bet on it. Find yourself a good one, an agent who knows their stuff and rely on repeat bookings and recommendations.
Smiling young clerks who hand you flight only brochures from the shelves are wasting your time and theirs .. be adventurous. An authentic vegetarian curry at 30,000ft beats Virgin's "Chicken or beef" any day :-)

My brother went Air India to New York, and hated it! Lol. He said that there was hardly any space, a lot less than BA or AA. The flight was delayed. The plane was old, tatty seats. Though with BA on strike at the moment I think its probably a good idea to fly on someone else.

I am still looking for that type of Travel Agent -- I had one in Vancouver who would find great hotels etc - Silver Leaf in Bermuda, etc. BUT cannot seem to find one in the UK -- they all just want to book what you tell them! Jo

My Dad used to work in Saudi Arabia and we'de fly either BA, Saudia or Gulf Air. But when they discovered that you could fly with KLM via Amsterdam and Egypt for a fraction of the price - they started doing that instead! C :)
