Secret Garden Hostel, not such a secret hideaway
Advantages: Great food, amazing views Disadvantages: chaotic organisation, expensive
The Secret garden is one of the most popular hostels in Quito and can be found in the San Blas area of the city just beside the old town and a half hour walk from the mariscal tourist area. The hostel is in a beautiful old style colonial house and on entering the hostel it is bright and airy with a small pond and garden. The reception is on the 4th floor so a long walk up at Quito's altitude (2850m). The hostel has a small computer room and common ... ...the rooms but in the Secret Garden it is extra. Costs in US$ are as follows: Dorms $8+ tax Doubles and Twins $20+tax Everything in the hostel (rooms, food, drinks, internet) is subject to a 12% tax that is not included in the original price that is quoted to customers. The owners say that this is common practice in Ecuador but I never found it anywhere else and know that most people get a bit of a nasty shock at the end of the stay when their bill ...

Hotel Reina Isabel
Advantages: Clean, fairly good facilities Disadvantages: Could do with a bit of a revamp.
We used this hotel as a base whilst staying in Quito and visiting the Galapagos Islands in April this year.
First Impressions
The hotel doesn’t look all that from the outside. There is a concierge man who is at the ready to assist you from your vehicle.
Reception Area
There is a nice clean marbled reception area. This area also has comfy leather settees complete with coffee table rather reminiscent of someone’s lounge. This area is great as a ... ...with the usual range of hotel toiletries and white fluffy towels. It was disappointing that such a room didn’t have tea/coffee making facilities although we had brought our own travel kettle. The rooms were cleaned each day.
Restaurant
We were only on a B&B basis so only ate breakfast so cannot comment on other meals. Breakfast was available allegedly from 7am but seemed to ready earlier to accommodate guests catching early flights. The breakfast ...

An Ecuadorable taste of luxury!
Advantages: Quite luxurious, Spa, Gym & Jacuzzi, good room service Disadvantages: Full of businessmen
...stayed three nights in the Hotel Dann Carlton as part of a six nights excursion from Peru to Quito and the Galapagos Islands. My Peruvian travel agent, who was a friend of the family I was staying with in Lima, chose the hotel for me - and made an excellent choice.
This is a 4* hotel which is mostly favoured by businessmen as it has conference facilities and a business centre.
A porter is always on duty at the door to greet guests, help with luggage ... ...On the ground floor there is a small business centre with 4 internet stations (free access), a bar area with live music in the evenings, and a large spacious dining room. Rooms are also spacious and come equipped with the usual heating/air conditioning, TV, phone, mini-bar - but the bathroom has extra little luxuries like bathrobes, disposable slippers, body lotion, hand cream, sewing kit, shoeshine kit.......small treats, but welcome after weeks ...

Watch your valuables!
Advantages: Fantastic view, beautiful lobby and penthouse bar Disadvantages: Theft of property
...and I stayed in the Hotel Quito in October 1994 so this opinion is based on an experience 18 months ago. We stayed one night before and two nights after a trip to Galapagos and the hotel was part of a package trip we booked with Explore Worldwide (a company I recommend v. highly). As it was part of a package, I don't know what the room rate was. I'm also sorry that I can't really remember a lot of detail about the rooms - but as there hasn't been ... ...On arriving at the hotel we were really surprised by the opulent lobby and the spectacular view of the valley behind. Fantastic flower displays several feet wide decorated the lobby with lots of beautiful fragrant roses - a bit of trivia for you - Ecuador is a major flower exporting country. The Hotel Quito is not part of an international hotel chain and is apparently quite a landmark in the city - best known for the views.
We'd been staying in ...

This Hotel Should Be Closed
Advantages: On a quiet street, near the Swiss Hotel, restaurant is very good. Disadvantages: Poorly run, manager absentee, no customer service
We were booked into the Hotel Quito on Suarez Gonzalez in Quito by our travel agent. We were willing to pay for a "superior" room. When we arrived, there was no record of our reservation. The hotel tried to charge us again. Burned out lightbulbs, bath fixtures that rattled on the wall, showers that backed up and the door to the balcony with the so called "beautiful view" was bolted shut. Erwin Dominguez, one of the clerks, double charged us for breakfast. ... ...snug about cheating us. Lots of other clerks running around, standing around accomplishing nothing. Jesus Sanchez is suppose to be the manager. He is absent most of the time. The location of this hotel is not special. The view is not worth the shoddy service. ...
