City centre gardens
Review of Princes Street Gardens by gsm4

Advantages: year round entertainment
Disadvantages: not good in rainy weather!

...Edinburgh, running the length of Princes Street (which is also the main street in the city) are the Princes Street gardens. Loved by visitors and locals alike, they are yet another crowning feature of this beautiful city. In the summer, they are host to a wide variety of events, as they (like many other places) become subsumed to the all-encompassing Festival. Delights this year included the Flea Circus, Lady Salsa, puppet shows, childrens theatre ...
...of the most magical evenings for me this year was lying on the sloping grass with a picninc, glass of wine, and good friends on a balmy summer's evening, listening to a free jazz concert. The gardens are frequented by both students and workers, and yet manage to preserve their air of tranquility and calm. They are beautifully tended and have some of the most spectacular views in the city - namely the castle, but also the Scott monument, New College ... Read review

More than just pubs
Review of Rose Street (Shopping Centre) by Morgenhund

Advantages: Some bargains
Disadvantages: Some dodgy refund policies.

Rose Street boasts an impressive number of pubs, as well as quite a few clothes shops. For evening wear, there's Get Shirty, which had a vast array of waistcoasts, dress-shirts, and bowties, as well as rugby shirts. There are several designer outlets which have gone downhill a bit over the last two years, with a lot of their produce being available elsewhere at slightly better prices. For jeans and so on you can get a wide selection of brands, at ... Read review

Dean Gallery
Review of The Dean Gallery by ciaoname1

Advantages: Free, uncrowded gallery
Disadvantages: Upstairs gallery was closed

...15 minute walk away from the Castle, and set on a hill on Belford Road. The gallery is housed in a 19th century 2 storey building, with a garden set out in front of it that contains quite a diverse range of sculptures. When I visited there was a strange mirror room on the lawn, and what looked like a wind vane, but also a very powerful Eduardo Paulozzi sculpture called Master of the Universe. If you like Eduardo Paulozzi's work, this is an excellent ...
...studio within the gallery. It's crammed with unfinished plaster sculptures and artifacts that inspired his work. You'll also find Dada and Surrealist work in this gallery, with paintings by well-known artists such as Miro and Man Ray, and even Picasso. I would have liked a bit more information about the art movements represented here, but there are a couple of cases showing the development of Dadaism. The rooms are quite small, and it was a pleasant ... Read review

The Art of Star Wars
Review of City Arts Centre by louise1971

Advantages: Spacious, well laid out, interesting
Disadvantages: Gift shop not that great

...(which is situated in the City Art Centre, 2 Market Street, Edinburgh – right next door to Waverley Station, very handy for out-of-towners), you will find the work of set and costume designers, model-makers, graphic artists and others. The exhibition is spread over 5 floors – this means that things are not too crowded, and you are not peering over someone’s shoulder to get a look. I’ll try to give you a taster of what I saw: ...
...work of graphic artists – these artists produce ‘concept designs’, used as sources of information and inspiration during the making of the film. Apart from probably being worth a huge amount of money, these pictures are fantastically detailed. I would go so far as to say, I would not be averse to having a couple of them hanging on my wall. VISUAL EFFECTS AND ‘CREATURES’ – First Floor On this floor, you can discover ... Read review

Mission: Impossible
Review of The 48 Hour Film Challenge by ibetudid

Advantages: It's a total buzz and you get to see your film on the big screen at the end of it all!
Disadvantages: You'll be tired for a week!

...immediately fell in love with the idea. Make a film from nothing to screen in 48 hours! It cannot be done! This was pretty much the response that everyone gave me when asking if they wanted to join me on my quest. However, undeterred by initial rejections I continued to gather together the most hard-working, multi-talented, mentally-astute, physically fit crew that ever created a cinematic masterpiece. Unfortunately, I didn't find them but beggars ...
...DAY 1 10am - The organisers hold an induction to the challenge explaining the rules and, finally, issuing us with our film title and genre. We get "Worthless Junk" a Fantasy/Sci-fi/Horror film. 11am - As director I panic. What on Earth can we do with this! Oh my God! Help! Of course all this is held behind my cool, calm, collected exterior so that I can be in control at all times and not give my crew cause for a mutiny! 11.30am - I send half ... Read review
