As soon as you walk out of Edinburgh station, you will see the castle loom over you from on high. It's an impressive sight. A visit to the castle is well rewarded with an in-depth look into Scottish history. With a reasonable entrance fee, you are given some headphones with commentaries and this provides useful information as you tour the castle and hear tales of the old Scottish Kings and Queens. Everything is much more modest than their English equivalents, but more homely as well. The highlight of the trip, for me, was to see the royal palace containing the Scottish Crown Jewels (older than their English equivalent) and the Stone of Scone, returned from Westminster in 1996. If you go to Edinburgh, this must be the first place to visit, as you will instantly feel the pride and tradition of the Scottish people's history.
