A great hotel to stay at when visiting Edinburgh
Advantages: Plenty to do and see, within walking distance Disadvantages: None
...book a room via the Holiday Inn Express website, as there are often cheaper rates available. Also I am a member of their Priority Club Rewards scheme which gives you points for every stay, which you can save up and redeem for free nights at any of their hotels. I have had a few free nights over the years, and am about to redeem another. Being a member of this scheme also entitles you to priority check in , extended check out times, comlimentary newspapers ... ...you via email. It is completely free to join and a great scheme. All details can be found online at HiExpress.co.uk. I last visited in February where I paid £35 for a double room for myself and partner - bargain! I always find that these hotels are clean, modern and comfortable with Continental Breakfast included in the price , you really can't go wrong. This particular hotel is situated on Ocean Drive, Leith, which is an area of Edinburgh which ...

Comfy rather than prickly, but not perfect.
Advantages: Clean, nice, good location Disadvantages: Breakfast wasn't great, heating nearly cracked my face
...Thistle is part of the King James Mall complex. This is at one end of Princes Street, the main road in the "New Town" of Edinburgh. It is very close to Waverley station and was very easy to find, although we had to ask a French guy running a stall outside the Mall where the entrance was. Although to be fair, we were very drunk by this point, having travelled up on the train with a bottle of vodka.
The main disadvantage to the location of the hotel ... ...in Edinburgh is uphill from the hotel, so even though it is quite centrally located, going anywhere did feel like a bit of a mission to me.
Appearance
In a town full of history, The Thistle is part of a complex that represents a less shining period of British architecture, being a fine example of concrete Brutalism. Basically it's a box on top of the Mall with large square windows.
Inside, an effort has been made to give the Thistle the ...

Bargain break in the city
Advantages: Lovely rooms, helpful staff. Disadvantages: No parking, view wasn't the greatest!
...I stayed at the Roxburghe Hotel last year with my fiance for the weekend. It is part of the MacDonalds hotel chain. Was a bit tricky to find it on Charlotte square but the annoying part was trying to find a nearby car park as the hotel has no parking facilites.
The hotel itself was very nice indeed! The staff were very friendly and helpful on every occasion. Did feel a bit out of place in my jeans and old trainers but all the same we didn't get ... ...queen size comfortable bed. The only thing that wasn't too nice was our view, you opened the curtains and saw a ledge with some dead birds and rubbish on it. Nice!! Room service was excellent. Mini bar was stocked full but i don't touch these as they are always way overpriced.
The location was fantasic as well, lots of restaurants and pubs etc nearby as well as many shopping centres. My friend works for MacDonalds and got us the room for £30 a night ...

Details break the first impression
Advantages: Centrally located Disadvantages: could be better for 4 stars hotel
...overlooking the Edinburgh castle.
The Apex International hotel has two restaurants, one on the ground floor and another one, the Heights, on the 5th floor, overlooking the castle. The food at the Heights is refined and well cooked, Scottish cuisine at its best, and it can claim a AA Rosettes certificate. Although the food was good I wasn't impressed by the restaurant's atmosphere. The room was a square box with no much decoration or colours, used ...

Stylish country in Edinburgh city
Advantages: Quiet, friendly, superb hospitality Disadvantages: Can't think of any
...about bus routes out to Channings, we took a taxi from the Railway Station and it cost around 6 GBP). Perhaps if you go on to its site you may learn about buses: www.channings.co.uk
(On the subject of the price - I went into the internet after writing this and found that on Sunday 30 September the twin room would be 120GBP and there are specials for Saturday and Sunday nights so I can only deduce that my higher price was for the rugby weekend!) ...
