Advantages: Central, good range of events Disadvantages: Can be expensive
You are unlikely to find a new adaptation of a Shakespearean classic, or a contemporary interpretation of Ibsen, but if you are after a entertaining night out, the Playhouse is a great option.
This is a large, traditional-style theatre, which plays host to a wide variety of events, but with the emphasis on light entertainment. A particular speciality is musicals, with recent runs of Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and Grease, ... ...(Steps and Michael Crawford, to name but two!) and special events as part of the festival.
Tickets are not cheap, with decent seats starting around £15 to £20, though concessions do sometimes apply.

Parking for the theatre is available in the nearby Greenside Lane and St James multistorey carparks, do not rely on getting on-street parking as the area is very busy.
The area is full of restaurants, most of whom offer pre-theatre menus, but a word of warning - if it is a popular show, especially a one-off, or a Saturday night, phone ahead and book. Otherwise, you may find only the fish and chip shop has space for you!
Advantages: Top Entertainment Disadvantages: Booking Fee's
I must thank those who have taken the time to comment with such a high regard for this theatre. Up until last year I was a proud member of The Playhouse management team where I helped the building achieve an "Investor in People" standard. We are all very proud of our committment to the highest level of customer service.
The staff are a family of talented individuals who love their jobs and are happy to attend to every customers need. The performances ... ...music acts such as Girls Aloud and even The Rolling Stones!!! Visit the Live Nation website to learn more.
The building is now 77 years old and was originally built as the largest cinema in Europe. It is a whopping 3000+ capacity based on the design of the Roxy Theatre in New York City! It remains the largest all seat venue in Britain today!
It has it's own ghost known as 'Albert' - who has an active presence. Some believe him to be an old stage ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Edinburgh Playhouse"
Advantages: Good food and atmosphere Disadvantages: You need to book well in advance
across the street from the EdinburghPlayhouse, so there are a huge amount of people booking for pre-theatre meals. The restaurant has a huge number of tables and was about half full when we went in for our 6pm booking, but started really filling up shortly afterwards.
The service in the restaurant was first class during our meal and the staff, who were all Italian, were very attentive and pleasant. They were so much in control of their job that they even were creating time for themselves to catch some of the football that was showing on a tv screen in a corner at the back of the restaurant. I guess we were lucky that the world cup game that was on that night didn't include Italy or we would have had to wait a bit longer for our meal. From ordering our meal to receiving our third course only took about an hour, so the service is very ...
Advantages: A rare kind of service Disadvantages: Decor
Mr Guiliano as he's known to his friends is a local Italian businessman who runs his own very special restaurants.
My expereince is with the Guiliano's at the top of Leith Walk opposite The EdinburghPlayhouse. For that reason it is the number one choice for theatre go-ers and can get very busy on show nights (especially at weekends).
Should you manage to secure a table, first impressions may be tainted by the decor which is in need of either some modernisation or more authentic Italianisation.
However these small details will soon be over-looked as you are presented with a fantastic menu in both wine and food.
You should keep in mind that your menu is being cooked by mainly an Italian workforce and uses some rather unique and delicious recipies. It adds to the expereince!
Your service will be of the highest standard ...
Advantages: Lots to do,great for tourits, shopping, eating out. Disadvantages: Gets very busy in Summer months, weather can be dreadful
shops, such as Toys R Us, Ikea etc.
THEATRE
One of my favourite theatres in Edinburgh is the EdinburghPlayhouse. The 'Playhouse is always hosting shows. These vary but they are normally musicals. In recent years shows such as Joseph and Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Mama Mia, High School Musical and Cats have been shown here. The theatre is an old building yet very comfortable.
The Kings theatre is another theatre in Edinburgh, famous for its annual pantomimes.
EATING OUT
Edinburgh is home to some wonderful restaurants and cafes. I am partial to eating in an Italian restaurant and they are usually of very high standards. I can thoroughly reccomend Al Fresco, as the service was fabulous and the food was to die for. They do a brillaint mushroom, pepperoni and ham pizza! There are Chinese restaurants, to name but one; Jimmy ...
