Prestongrange Dining
Advantages: Opulent, flavoursome, hedonistic, marvellous Disadvantages: Having to leave it when you could stay forever
...AA and more. The opulent Prestonfield House is simply one of Edinburgh and the UK's finest destinations for fine dining, afternoon teas and hotel accommodation.
Friends of mine recently arranged a celebration tea there and were impressed by the ambience and lavish levels of service. They sampled the 'Tea House' , set in a formal rose garden within the grounds. Privacy was theirs as they indulged in a heady selection of teas, coffees, sandwiches ... ...champagne.
Prestonfield offers a fine selection of eating options. Rhubarb is the eccentrically named fine dining venue set in two over the top Regency rooms. It is the latest venture of James Thompson whose 'The Witchery' with it's rather Gothic setting close to the Castle and romantic candlelit tables, is of course an established Edinburgh dining legend. Expect to sample the finest Scottish ingredients, such as succulent Angus Lamb.
For added ...

A tabernacle of terror
Advantages: Atmosphere Disadvantages: none
...what is essentially a Dr Jekyll museum.
Well recommended. This has to be my most favourite pub in the UK. If I lived in Edinburgh I wouldn't be out of this place. It won't appeal to everyone but tough. It appeals to like minded people so that makes it absolutely perfect. ...

Down to the Last Drop
Advantages: Good food, friendly and cosy Disadvantages: Not a great choice of beers
...far below Edinburgh Castle, lies the Grassmarket - a small open space that has played an important role in Edinburgh's history. As the name implies, the Grassmarket used to be where local farmers brought their hay and other produce for sale. But it was also the location of one of the main gallows in the city and crowds would flock in huge numbers to see the public executions. Pubs in the Grassmarket are not an uncommon sight, they literally line ... ...theme, are MAGGIE DICKSON'S and THE LAST DROP TAVERN. Immediately outside their doors was the scene of public hangings back in the 18th century. Maggie Dickson was one of the victims of the gallows, but when tossed on the burial cart after her 'execution', she could be heard still moaning. After some attention, she survived and lived out her remaining days down in Portobello where she was known as 'Hauf Hingit Maggie!' Nowadays, on summer afternoons ...

Dissapointing
Advantages: good food, Disadvantages: bad booking system, unfriendly staff
I'd heard a lot about Guilianos and had read many positive reviews however I was disappointed. My girlfriend and I decided to go there after her sister recommended it. It was the middle of the Edinburgh festival so I wasn't sure if we'd get a table but we did. I booked a table for 7pm on their online booking system but when we turned up at the restaurant at 7 we were told we'd have to wait a few minutes for our table. A few minutes turned into 15 ... ...get seated straight away. We were taken to a table with no cutlery or glasses or anything. We were then left another 15 minutes before we were even asked if we'd like any drinks. We'd been looking at the menu for half an hour so we of course knew what we wanted. The staff did not seem interested in us at all and we had to really fight for their attention as they seemed to be only watching the large party of 20 they had in. On the positive side both ...

A traditional atmospheric Italian
Advantages: Friendly, good service, gorgeous tasting fresh cooked food, an extensive menu that caters well both in taste and price Disadvantages: It's popular so to avoid disappointment you will have to book
4 of us went on Saturday evening and the whole experience was delightful. The menu is extensive and caters for all tastes. The specials are very good and the waiter is knowledgable about the ingrediants used.
We all chose the scallops as a starter and we all agreed they were lovely. For main course we had:
Sword Fish
Monk Fish
Halibut
King Prawn pasta
All of the above dishes were cooked to perfection. The sauces that they came with tasted divine ... ...a pleasure. We had 3 bottles of good quality wine and the bill came to £35 per head.
The staff were friendly despite the fact that they were extremely busy and they were turning people away who hadn't had the forsight to book. We didn't wait for ages between courses and we didn't feel hurried to vacate our table. All in all a great experience and we will definately go again when we are next in Edinburg. ...
