If visiting Edinburgh i would recommend you visiting Edinburgh Zoo. Its a great day out for the family. There is over 1000 animals there and is growing continually. Recently they have added a great kangaroo enclosure.
Staff are really friendly and informative about the animals and animals are well taken care of
HISTORY Edinburgh Zoo was founded in 1909 by lawyer Thomas Gillespie buying 85 acres of land and was opened to the public in 1913. It is located on a steep hill but dont let this put you off as there are hilltop safari rides taking you all over the zoo and giving you a commentary of the zoo. This zoo is the largest in Scotland and specialises in its conservation and educational programmes.
A MUST If you like penguins you will love this zoo as it has a great variety and daily has a penguin walk where the penguins come right up to your feet its a great experience
When you go make sure you wear reasonable shoes if you decide to walk the zoo rather than the hilltop bus as there is quite a distance to walk and with the steep hill can be quite tiresome
The zoo is sectioned into different areas ie safari animals grazing on plains at the top of the hill, monkey houses, reptile house, big cats area etc and information about each animal is easily on view
In the centre of the zoo is a large mansion house where a very nice restaurant is located the house was built in 1793 and has been preserved to show its architecture.
Make sure when you enter the zoo you get a free map showing all areas of the zoo and some parts can be easily missed with all the winding paths.
There are two cafes at the zoo and also large picnic areas. The cafes are reasonably priced offering hot and cold food. Around the zoo there are plenty of kiosks offering ice-cream and drinks.
We've always found this zoo good value for money and you can easily spend the whole day there is there is so much to see

Best buy is the FAMILY TICKET - 2 ADULTS AND 2 CHILDREN for £32.00 for the day and the zoo is open daily usually 9-6 depending on what time of year you go.

I have seen money off vouchers in brochures that can be picked up at tourist information centres so its always worth checking it out.
And lastly before you leave the zoo make sure you visit the shop at the exit its massive, got a great selection of goods and i personally think its really reasonably prices - plenty of things for kids to buy under £1
