...north, so it was to Edinburgh that I turned my weary eyes. A bit of atmospheric Scottish mist, some culture and of course some shopping was what I needed to recharge my batteries. I booked the train tickets at the last minute, so I knew I was going to have to pay through the nose, but having checked out the timetable online, I called GNER on 08457 225 225 and spoke to a friendly man in their Newcastle call centre (honestly the nicest call centre ...
...skyline, Arthur's Seat. They call Edinburgh Auld Reekie - Old Smokey - and although the smog from a thousand coal fires doesn't settle over the city like it used to, you can see how it got the name. On one side of Edinburgh is an estuary - the Firth of Forth - and there are hills on every other side, so when the fog rolls in off the sea, it seems to hang ominously low over the city, but in a good, atmospheric way, not a bad way, you understand. ...

What a great city

Advantages: Glorious architecture, loads to do
Disadvantages: Inclement weather

...European Cities, but believe me, Edinburgh is a fantastic place to come home to (and I am sure I am not biased!). Hopefully over the next wee while, I can give you a taste of Edinburgh, and persuade you to visit. Before going any further though, I would recommend you have a look at the website www.efr.hw.ac.uk - a really useful website. Although it does have a rather large and scary picture of our Lord Provost, Eric Milligan! I'll start this off ...

Embra the best place to be

Advantages: Loads to see and do
Disadvantages: Can be very cold

Edinburgh is also known as Embra, Auld Reekie and loads of other things to name a few. Auld Reekie comes from the days of steam trains and coal chimneys, what happened was the buildings in the main town centre near the Waverley Train Station went black due to the steam and smoke, the buildings have all been cleaned in recent years and are back to the glorious original selves. Glasgow has tried to claim that it should be the capital of Scotland for ...
...Scott Monument and the magnificent Edinburgh Castle in the backdrop a picture perfect postcard whatever time of day or night it is, no matter what season of the year it is! Although I must admit this year is the first year I have seen it covered in snow since I have lived here, and I can only say it is one of the most beautiful sights I have seen perfect Christmas card scene. There are numerous old buildings and monuments that have been there for ...

Sleevie an' Ra Jook

Advantages: Beautiful city. History, architecture, culture and fine beer.
Disadvantages: Niddrie? Craigmillar? No...none really!

...you can manage one. Edinburgh is, you see, my home town. Edinburgh, Embra, Auld Reekie, Eedin-boro’, call it what you will and (mis)pronounce it how you like, is where I was brought up, where I was educated, where I misbehaved and where I learned a thing or two about the opposite sex. Also where I acted as an unpaid tour-guide to my parents’ many overseas guests and friends. I learned a great deal about the history of the city, and about its architecture. ...
...too big to be little. Edinburgh too has changed in the 25 years or so of my exile to the Saarf, and many of my memories of the place are now seriously flawed. However, the history stays essentially the same. Revisionists would have a hard time altering the storyline when every stone and boulder has its tale, every skyline has its unyielding beauty and so much of the story is told and retold by the natives as though it happened to them or their fathers. ...

Wonderful City.

Advantages: Many Great Attractions.
Disadvantages: Not very well signposted.

As a visitor to Edinburgh I have always found this a wonderful City. There is a terrific amount of history in Edinburgh, which is of course dominated by Edinburgh Castle which overlooks the city centre. There are also so many interesting places to visit that you can go back time after time and still find new attractions. In contrast to the historical buildings there is a vast amount of new building work going on which gives the City a vibrant, fresh ...
...if you do drive into Edinburgh then you will be impressed by the courtesy of the other drivers. In fact throughout the City you find that everybody is polite and helpful, which certainly is not the case in many large cities. We also felt very safe in Edinburgh. I am sure that there may be areas of Edinburgh that may not be so friendly, and Friday/Saturday nights might be different, but everywhere we went and saw was very pleasant. There seems to ...

What a lovely city

Advantages: Beautiful
Disadvantages: Quite crowded during the festival

We started our holiday touring Scotland with a three night stay in a bed and breakfast in Musselburgh, a suburb of Edinburgh, called simply The Guest House. This in itself was exceptionally good value - good food and good company at a reasonable price. We went into Edinburgh for a days sightseeing, but we could have done with longer. We didn't really have the time to visit the castle or any of the major attractions so we climbed the Camera Obscura for a panoramic view of the city instead. The Edinburgh Festival was in full swing so we saw street theatre as well which was most entertaining and really adda to the atmosphere generally. I think a longer visit is called for..... ...

Moorings

Advantages: Local. Large old house but modern. Charismatic.
Disadvantages: You are best having a car with you.

consuming, but if it's a nice day most people opt to do that anyway. Motherwell train and bus station is 5mins up the road from the Moorings so if you want a bus/train to surrounding areas you can get trains every5mins to most local places including Glasgow - a bit longer for Edinburgh though. In general it is one of the best places to stay if you are staying in the Motherwell - for price and quality. If you are planning to see the local sights then definitely hire a car. The hotel is in prime location but our Motherwell area just basically needs a car if you want to see things in a timely fashion without spending loads of time and money on buses! For full details of special offers, functions and tariffs you can check out their website http://www.mooringsmotherwell.co.uk/ ...

Review of Moorings Hotel, Motherwell

A museum of 2 halves !

Advantages: a relaxing place with lots to see
Disadvantages: not free

terrace with a goo dview of Edinburgh. The theme is scottish history and culture in general, ranging from traditional articles of weaponary and heraldry on the ground floor to articles from recent scottish history, such as memorabilia from the likes of Jackie Stewart and Sean Connery. Right on the top floor is a restaurant called the tower. It is not cheap, and cheerful like the average museum canteen, but run by the same people as the Witchery has a reputation for good food. Both parts of the museum are well worth a vist, get a season ticket, not much more than the standard admission, becasue there is too much to see in one visit. ...
