It's fantastic, firstly it looks so nice, there is no other city in the world that looks as nice as Edinburgh. The city centre is basically in two parts, the Old Town and the New Town.
The Old Town is mediaeval in layout with little tiny houses and alleyways. The castle is also in the Old Town and this is a must visit place for anyone who goes to Edinburgh. The castle is perched on the core of an old volcano and it has such good views of Edinburgh and the surrounding countryside that it is worth paying the entrance fees just for these. However, the castle itself is also incredibly interesting with great displays including the Scottish Crown Jewels. The history of Scotland is basically the history of Edinburgh Castle so it is a great place to visit. The Old Town also includes the Royal Mile. This is a mile long cobbled street lined with cafes and souvenir shops. At the end on it is Holyrood House, which is the Queen's residence when she is in Edinburgh. It is possible for the public to look round and while it is very expensive I feel that it is worth it.
Next to Holyrood House is Holyrood Park which is a wide expanse of wilderness slap bang in the middle of the city with its very own mountain, Arthur's Seat. This is a great place to go to walk and get away from it all.
The New Town is separated from the old town by a park called Prince's Street Gardens. These gardens are also pleasant to walk in and are much more cultivated than Holyrood Park. The New Town itself if Georgean in design and is not that dissimilar to Bath. The main shopping street in Edinburgh is Princes Street which is one of the streets in the New Town. If you are going to visit just one shop in Edinburgh then I suggest you go to Jenners, 'The Harrods of the North', oh and there's a great whisky shop on Princes Street.
Edinburgh is a bussling city with lots of culture, great shopping and a super night life. The city really comes to life, however, during the festival which is on during August and if you want to go then may I suggest you go then.
In conclusion there is so much going on in Edinburgh that it is great for a short break as well as a long holiday. It is also a great place to base yourself if you wish to tour Scotland.
If you go to Edinburgh I'm sure you'll have a great time. Oh, and don't forget to send me a postcard!
