I am just back after a fabulous if not cold trip to New York where we were lucky enough to stay at the Hotel Edison. I would like to share my thoughts on the hotel with you.
The Edison hotel was built in 1931in true Art Deco style it is situated on 228 West 47th Street just half a block from Times Square and one block from restaurant row. A few steps in either direction and you can enjoy the great theatres of Broadway so the situation of this hotel is perfect. From our bedroom window we could see Times Square.
Check in
We arrived at the hotel by taxi from JFK airport and were immediately greeted by the bellboy who retrieved our cases from the taxi and set them down in the lobby for us he then left just as quick and did not wait for a tip. The desk was long and well staffed I did not have to wait and handed over our hotel voucher and after a couple of signatures I was given the card keys to room 2118. We were on the 21st floor of this 22 storey hotel.
I was then shown where the lifts were and wished a nice day. There were a row of lifts servicing the 22 floors ( 6 I think ) and 1 came in seconds.
There was a security guard at the entrance to the lift area and key cards had to be shown before entry was permitted though it has to be said I never really saw this being strictly enforced.
The Room (2118)
I unlocked the door and ahead was a small passage that lead into a large corner room. It was very bright as sun streamed in three large windows. And together with the high ceilings made it very light and airy. When you entered the room the first thing you came to was the dressing table / Writing desk which had a drawer with writing paper postcards and a pen also in the drawer was the laundry bag. Above it hung a large round mirror and on top was a lamp and a clock radio. There was a chair to sit at the desk. There were twin beds with wooden headboards and navy patterned bedspreads, between which was a bedside table with lamp and telephone. Above the beds were framed pictures.
At the other side of the room was a round table with two comfortable chairs one with matching footstool ( a godsend after a hard day sightseeing) also a standard lamp in the same style as the other lamps in the room they were reminiscent of Rennie McIntosh.
There was a large 4 drawer chest with a cupboard on top which when opened housed a large TV and the remote was on another small table between the windows. The windows were beautifully dressed with nets, cream curtains, pelmets and tiebacks. There were ample plugs for recharging the batteries and a small bin for rubbish.
There were three doors of the room so on further investigation one was a large shelved cupboard that had all the phone books in it. Door two had a full length mirror on the outside and was a walk in wardrobe with loads of hanging space also hooks for coats and a luggage rack plus ironing board and iron. Door three was the bathroom.
The Bathroom
Had a bath, shower, toilet and wash hand basin in white with a shelf over the sink, there was also a strip light over the sink and a small opening window behind the toilet. There was also a hairdryer but after seeing blue flashes coming off it decided just to towel dry my hair.
On a shelf there were loads of soft white towels in all sizes extra soap, tissues, paper cups, shampoo, shower caps, and spare loo roll.
It was not a large room and tiles were a bit dated but perfectly adequate.
The room was fitted with smoke alarms and fire instructions were on the back of the door. The room was heated by storage heaters and though these were not on the room was pleasantly warm even though it was freezing outside, the bathroom did have a hot water pipe running through it that made it very warm.
The room was cleaned daily with sheets and towels also being changed.
Café Edison
this family run café is open 7 days a week mon - fri 6am to 10pm and sun 6am to 8pm and offers good food at reasonable prices. We only ever had breakfast but the cereal was Kellogg's and my son loved the waffles. If you expect a huge Florida brekkie you will be disappointed.
Sofia's
This is a three level Restaurant serving a touch of Italy 7 days a week lunch and dinner. I can't comment we didn't eat there.
Rum House
Cocktail Lounge with live entertainment open tue-sat 8-30pm to 1am and sun 12pm - 4am. It was quite small and dark so we didn't go in so again can't comment
Other Services
Currency exchange at reception desk
Safety deposit box available free at desk a key is supplied on application.
Airport transportation desk we arranged this and saved a few dollars but if I was there again I would just get a taxi as our transport went to La Guardia airport first and with heavy traffic took nearly 2 hours to get to JFK.
Gift shop in foyer sold essentials and lots of I love New York gifts.
Concierge we booked a show and dinner package and tickets were delivered promptly.
Room service didn't use
Health Club Didn't use
Wake up call Didn't use
There was a mail box in lobby and telephones, wireless internet was available throughout the hotel.
Check out was at 12 midday and we left our bags with the very efficient baggage service who looked after them at the charge of 50cents per case.
There was a large comfortable lounge just off reception decorated with art deco murals.
From 2007 this is a non smoking hotel which suited us fine.
I have tried to find the star rating for this hotel and have seen it as 2, 3 and 3 and a half I would personally give it a 3.
Most of the décor is fresh but some of the carpets on the way to the room can only be described as tired and in need of replacing though room carpet was fine. I am not sure if the lower floors may be affected by traffic noise we certainly were fine.
I loved this hotel the staff were all so friendly nothing was too much trouble which made for a very enjoyable stay. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Hotel Edison
Review of Edison Hotel, New York City by

Advantages: Right by times square
Disadvantages: The view wasn't great
This Febuary just gone I was lucky enough to jet off to NYC with my school. We stayed at a hotel just off of times square, it was a great hotel (considering it was 2 stars).
Rooms: Although they weren't huge, they were just about the right size. With two double beds, a big cabinet with a TV in it, bedside table and a chair there was still room for 3 of us girls and our gigantic luggage!
The room was quite dark luckily the lamps could be turned ... ...sleeping on a slab of concrete, I actually enjoyed sleeping in them and also they were very spacious so with me and my friend in there, there was still lots of room. Also you wouldn't have to be cold in that new york winter because I found the bedding was quite think. The bathroom wasn't exactly huge so it made getting dressed in there quite hard, but the shower and basin were both clean. Although the toilet scared me because it made the loudest ...

Advantages: Right on TimeSquare,Friendly Staff,Big rooms.
Disadvantages: view
This Hotel is right around the corner from Times Square so is ideal for a Show fanatic and anyone who loves the buzz of a big City,
1) The outside is nothing to look at,but inside wow!! fantastic Arc deco furniture, mirrors, paintings, amazing bright colours ,the reception is staffed by around 5 friendly staff-so no problem checking in.
2) Has a small shop in foyer so you can get all those little things like, post cards, stamps, tacky souviners, papers, juice ... ...Internet access, around 2 dollars for Twenty minutes, you just get an access code from receptionists and pay or add to bill.
4) Foyer also has a bank of 6 phones in a quiet wee area,so you can have privacy when calling home.
5)There is also an concierge will help with trips, taxis, theatre tickets, shuttles back to airport-was open from around 8am-8pm when we were there in October last year, very helpful.
6) Up to the room now, there are 4 lifts so need ...

Great Location!
Review of Edison Hotel, New York City by
joedirt99
Advantages: Fantastic Location, Great Service, Helpful Staff,
Disadvantages: Only the View
I stayed at the Edison Hotel in New York over New Years 2005/2006, and had a wonderful time. Although my first impression of the hotel was that it was just an ordinary building with lots of rooms like so many others in New York, but that opinion soon changed when I entered the hotel. The decor was nothing short of delightful, bright and colourful, with paintings, mirrors and furniture completing the set-up of the foyer area. The staff were extremely ... ...from the Edison. The Edison also has the 'Piano Bar' which is very welcoming and had a fantastic atmosphere on New Years Eve and a very wide range of Alcoholic bevrages.
As our visit was during the new year celebrations, which took place on Times Square, the Edison proved to be the ideal location as the New York Police Department closed of an 18 block perimeter around Times Square. Luckily, the Edison Hotel was well within the perimeter and just ...

Review of Edison Hotel, New York City by
Kurlywurly
Advantages: Rooms are spacious, clean, fresh and everyone is so friendly.
Disadvantages: No disadvantges, loved this place.
I visited this hotel with my school in February 2007 and there was a group of 40 with 5 teachers. The group included boys and girls, there were very welcoming when we arrived after a long flight from England and getting up a 4.30. They allowed us up to our rooms, which where very spacious and comfortable. They had big double beds, which could have easily have fitted three people in. The bathroom was spacious and clean with lovley hot water for when ... ...long weary day. They provided us with big white fluffy towels to use after our bath and shower and layed out complimenatry gifts for us to use.
The hotel is just round the corner from Times Square which is buzzing all the time with the bright lights.
I recommend you visit this hotel, with its friendly staff and comfortable beds. ...

The Edison Hotel, New York City:
Built in 1931 This glorious hotel is located at 228 West 47th Street. Here I will write up a short review upon my experience in the hotel last year.
Location:
as previously mentioned situated in one of the most dynamic sections of New York City 228 West 47th Street, Directly in the middle of New York which means little walking distance to wherever you may want to venture.
Rooms:
Depending on what type of accomodation ... ...it to you. Personally our room was slightly better than standard due to us being on a work trip. Anyway we had two people per room, a king sized bed each, a mini fridge which was stocked up 2 times a day, lovely carpeted floors, TV (Full channel), Chairs, Lamps, Pictures, and best of all a laptop and access to the internet (Provided by reception for little cost) - a few dollars.
