I stayed at the Edison Hotel in New York over New Years 2005/2006, and had a wonderful time. Although my first impression of the hotel was that it was just an ordinary building with lots of rooms like so many others in New York, but that opinion soon changed when I entered the hotel. The decor was nothing short of delightful, bright and colourful, with paintings, mirrors and furniture completing the set-up of the foyer area. The staff were extremely helpful on our arrival, and this was soon proven as the room that we were given initially was the wrong one. 1 phone call to reception and within 5 minutes we were helped into the correct room. The room itself was very spacious, comfortable and clean, but lacked one essential component, a nice view. However, the great location easilly made up for the poor view as the hotel is situated on 47th and Broadway. The hotel is right in the middle of New York's amazing theatre district. For anybody that loves the threatre there could possibly be no better placed hotel than the Edison. Just a couple of blocks away is the superb Shubert Theatre which features the wonderful comedic musical "Spamalot". Also, within walking distance of the Hotel, is Times Square, Central Park, The Rockefeller Centre, Empire State Building, Museum of Modern Art, Radio City music Hall and many more attractions. All wonderful places that must be visited. Macys, Saks on Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales provide the shopping experience that you will never forget, and all within walking distance from the Edison. The Edison also has the 'Piano Bar' which is very welcoming and had a fantastic atmosphere on New Years Eve and a very wide range of Alcoholic bevrages.
As our visit was during the new year celebrations, which took place on Times Square, the Edison proved to be the ideal location as the New York Police Department closed of an 18 block perimeter around Times Square. Luckily, the Edison Hotel was well within the perimeter and just by showing our hotel key card, this allowed us to move freely through the road blocks and closer to the new year celebrations. For anybody thinking of going to New York now, or in the future, I highly recommend the Edison Hotel as its great value for money, and is situated in a fantastic location.
