A Royal Cruise fit for a Pharaoh,

Advantages: Treated like Royalty from Beginning to end.
Disadvantages: Bar prices are steep.

SS Misr. The SS Misr was built in Preston Lancashire in 1918 originally for the Egyptian Royal Navy and bought by King Farouk of Egypt as a private cruiser which traversed the Nile. It is recorded that he had held his birthday celebrations aboard this boat. Since the building of the Aswan Dam it used to sail right up the Nile but now is only able to sail as far as Aswan. Misr means the Kingdom of Egypt. It fell into disrepair and was brought ...
...in elegant and period style and is used exclusively by Voyages Jules Verne for tours of the Nile. Being a steam ship it rekindles memories of Agatha Christie’s death on the Nile. It offers elegant and tasteful luxury service and there are over 60 members of staff to 46 passengers. There were only 42 passengers on our cruise. The ship has three decks and is 62 meters in length. There are two boilers and two steam engines which produce 4.2 tons of ...

(don't get crowded to) Death on the Nile - MS Kasr Ibrim

Advantages: Not crowded, still pretty exclusive, do it now before everyone gets there
Disadvantages: Quiet, not much nightlife, limited shopping, not everyone's cup of tea, very very hot

...new trip for Egypt, a cruise on Lake Nasser (above the Aswan High Dam) towards the Egyptian/Sudanese border. This is a very different prospect indeed. There are only 6 ships working this 250km-long lake and in fact I only saw one other ship in the four days we were on the trip. This is a complete contrast to the lower part of the trip, where there might be 50 or more large Nile cruisers in sight at one time – each one with maybe several hundred passengers ...
...per person with two sharing, which included return schedule flights from the UK. This part of the trip – 4 nights on the Kasr Ibrim, full board – represented about £500 for the two of us, so you can call it £250pp but allow for single supplements. Kasr Ibrim is made to look like a paddle steamer, but the paddles are false and this is just a screw-driven ship but nothing wrong with that. Fast enough and comfortable, the ship actually looks like a ...

...much it cost me in Egypt for the 10 days I was there. That includes food, train tickets, entrance fees and accomodation. I thought it was an excellent deal. I travelled to Egypt during December and due to the limited time I had I could only travel to Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. The three major tourist spots. I have written the review based on my experiences. You will find that the most expensive part of travel to Egyopt will be the flight tickets. I ...
...eye opener to how old Egypt really is. From Coptic Cairo it is possible to get to Islamic Cairo by public transport but it is a slightly fragmented journey which involves a bus and a taxi. Islamic Cairo and its mosques are located in an awkward area so it more advisable to take a taxi. From Coptic Cairo to Islamic Cairo , the taxi rate for the locals in EGP2. Tourists should be able to pay 10EGP. You have to haggle to get this price. Try taking the ...

The Red Sea and beyond

Advantages: a wide variety of experiences on offer
Disadvantages: none

Introduction The Gulf of Aqaba is on of two channels of water that form the top of the Red Sea, the other being the Gulf of Suez. The much disputed Sinai peninsular sits between the two channels and the Gulf of Aqaba forms its eastern coast and is also the farthest eastern point in Egypt itself, this is where the African influences of Egypt merge with what used to be called the Holy Land by scholars. Geographically the gulf is an integral part of ...
...and 160 kilometres long, the Gulf is a large shallow water coastal environment with four countries sharing ownership. Almost the entire western coast of the waters belongs to Egypt and the opposite side to Saudi Arabia. Near the top of the gulf both Jordan and Israel border these coastal waters as well. The Environment The Gulf of Aqaba, and the countries that border it, has a difficult task on its hands. Most of the cities on the coast are vital ...

Valley of the KIngs

Advantages: Amazing tombs
Disadvantages: Far too hot for comfort

We arrived at 8am in october and it was already up to 40 degrees celcius which i found was far too hot to cope with. Be wary of taking young children as though there is sum shade, it is not easy to find and you have to stand in the sun for very lond periods of time. The tombs were amazing, a once in a lifetime experience and entry entitles you to visit 3 of them. Tutankhamuns temple is an extra cost, an many people advised us that it was not worth ...
...are actually astonishing- you really have to see them to believe them...amazing to think they were done so long ago! There was no hassle from salespeople once you were inside =, but the entrance is convered with them, Young women need to be very wary of the men as they try to take advantage and will grab hold of you- my advice is to go with a man and wear a wedding ring, though this is still not 100% effective. Otherwise just cover up modestly to ...
