El Mercado Lanza, La Paz

Advantages: A lively and exciting city
Disadvantages: Thieves all over the place

..., and mercado Lanza also seems to be good for most things apart from vegetables and bread - but it has all the things you might want for a basic lunch or dinner, like pasta, rice, cheese, eggs, meat, onions. The entrance is right next to the foot of the curvy bridge going over calle Montes, close to the San Francisco plaza. If you walk up through the market to the back, there's a whole street of fruit, and there always seem to be a few ladies sitting selling bread on the corner of calle Santa Cruz and Figueroa. (Bread-wise, maraquetas are the speciality of La Paz - these rolls are sort of crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside (armadillos!), and I really like them.) Eating street food is not particularly recommended, but if you want to eat really cheaply then there are cafes all over the place which do set lunches - almuerzos - for under 10... Read review

Disadvantages: Caro el buffet

...Es un hotel con una amabilidad infinita. Desde la recepcion hasta los botones. Excepcional situacion y vistas desde las terrazas (a un lado el mar, al otro las montañas de selva tropical). Practicamente en primera linea de playa, en el paseo maritimo, en la zona mas "chic". Quiza lo mas dificil es encontrar un sitio para desayunar (el buffet no lo probamos porque es bastante caro, al igual que la comida y la cena), pero para ir de compras esta muy bien: cerca el mercado de honolulu, con de todo lo que quieras comprar. Cerca tambien del zoo, de la mejor zona de playa de waikiki y de buenos restaurantes (recomiendo el cheesecake factory para cenar). Me agrado especialmente lo que ellos llaman la hospitality room: una habitacion que te dejan una hora si has facturado a las 12 de la mañana pero no sale tu avion hasta por la tarde.... Read review

...with huge carnivorous grins. Somewhat inevitably you'll find McDonald's sitting rather unnoticeably in the middle of Plaza De Etudiente, one of La Paz's more laid back public squares. Here again the prices are well above average but once in a while a good injection of western toxification is as welcome as finding a hostel with hot water. If you want to eat on the cheap then just about every street in town has a varied menu to keep you nourished. Most of the street stalls have a Saltena of some kind on offer but if you look hard enough you can push the boat out and have a hamburgesa and papa fritas. Just don't expect to get a clean bill of health the next time you visit the doctor. A step up from the street stalls are the numerous little cafes that you'll find in and around the Mercado Negro.
