Eldon Square is the main shopping centre in the wonderful city of Newcastle upon Tyne. Eldon Square first opened its doors in 1976 and has remained very popular with local people, mainly due to the huge benefit of being in doors (Have you seen how often it rains in Newcastle??). The centre has many different entrances and is spread out across the city. Main entrances are on Northumberland Street, Monument and Newgate Street.
Eldon Square is now open 7 days a week , but many of the smaller shops do not open on a Sunday. At Christmas time opening hours are extended so people like me can spend longer running about like headless chickens not knowing what i want for Prezzies. Opening times, except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Easter Sunday on which the centre is shut are :-
The best way to visit is perhaps by Metro to Monument Station which is Newcastles Urban trams system. Haymarket Station is about 5 minutes walk away from the Nothumberland Street Entrance. If your travelling in to Newcastle up train, your about 7 minutes walk away, or you can connect on to the Metro upto the Monument.
Finding a car parking in Newcastle is a bit like trying to find Hens teeth, so do yourself a favour and park outside of the city and travel in by bus or Metro. Try parking next to The Redhurgh Bridge or at Manor Warner village both are about 5 to 10 minutes walk away from the centre.
The most important bits are the shops. Eldon Square benefits over the GatesheadMetrocentre as there are more down to earth shops, perhaps due to the fact that Metrocentre charge the earth in rents, so this makes it impossible for them to make a living there.
The best shops here are without a doubt Fenwicks and Bainbridges (part of John Lewis group) which are major department store and ones which I visit regularly. Theres also a large Marks and Spencers, Argos, and Boots along with many more shops offering a good service. One thing we miss here is a computer shop, in fact all of Newcastle does.
Eldon Square is always busy, but not uncomfortable to shop in.I do recommend it to come and have a look around if you in Newcastle.Eldon Square compliments the local shopping area.

Advantages: Great place to meet up with people or to chill out mid-shop! Disadvantages: It's not Greek? Other than that, nothing else springs to mind....
