This course was constructed by Elmwood College, which is the top European College for Golf Management Studies, and opened in 1997. Regrettably, I think they have to study a bit harder. To give it the benefit of the doubt, the course was originally agricultural land and still has a lot of settling in to do. You still get the feeling of walking from field to field as a lot of the original walls are still there.
The surrounding countryside is open farmland with Tarvit Hill to the south and Lomond Hills to the west. It’s a lovely setting and the welcome cannot be faulted.
THE COURSE
It’s a par 70 (sss 68) for men and par 73 (sss72) for ladies. The course is pretty straightforward with only a few greenside bunkers (no fairway bunkers).
The only real problem is the knee high rough if you are really wayward.
1. 343yd (319yd ladies) par 4. Straightforward hole with no problems.
2. 512yd (491yd ladies) par 5. Slight dogleg left with out of bounds on the right and heavy rough separating it from the 4th. A greenside bunker on the left of the green.
3. 174yd (160yd ladies) par 3. Straightforward hole with no trouble unless you overshoot.
4. 456yd par 4 (431yd par 5 ladies). Dogleg right with no trouble other than the heavy rough separating it from the 2nd and 5th.
5. 306yd (274yd ladies) par 4. Slightly uphill but other than the rough on the right – no trouble.
Into the next field.
6. 404yd (370yd ladies) par 4. Slight dogleg left but straightforward enough.
7. 184yd (162yd ladies) par 3. Bunker to the right and heavy rough if you overshoot.
8. 410yd (396yd ladies) par 4. Slightly uphill and the only trouble the rough on each side.
9. 128yd (116yd ladies) par 3. Large green with a bunker front left. Wall to the right.
10. 266yd (256yd ladies) par 4. Blind tee shot over a slight rise and back down to the green. The only trouble the rough on each side of the fairway.
11. 526yd (485yd ladies) par 5. Straightforward until the approach shot. A ditch runs along in front of the green that is set in a dip.
Into the next field. 12. 156yd (117yd ladies) par 3. Bunker front and left but no trouble otherwise.
13. 313yd (286yd ladies) par 4. Slight dogleg left with bunkers on both sides of the green.
14. 329yd (291yd ladies) par 4. Slight dogleg left with one bunker back left of the green.
Back to the previous field.
15. 310yd (280yd ladies) par 4. Slight dogleg right playing over a slight rise.
16. 272yd (250yd ladies) par 4. Straightforward hole with no problems.
Into the next field.
17. 447yd par 4 (408yd ladies par 5). Elevated tee – straightforward hole.
18. 424yd par 4 (405yd ladies par 5). Blind tee shot to a slightly elevated green with the only trouble being the rough and out of bounds on the right.
FACILITIES
The course is situated approximately one mile west of Cupar at Stratheden and about 10 minutes from St Andrews. It is well signposted.
Nice clubhouse with a comfortable conservatory shaped lounge looking out over the course and surrounding countryside. A patio with wooden tables and chairs with the same outlook. Adequate changing rooms with showers, lockers, etc although it feels a bit barren.
The catering is superb and is open 7 days 9am to 9pm. Starters range from £1.85 (home made soup and crusty bread) - £2.85 (little Thai fish cakes flavoured with chillies, coriander, ginger and spring onion, served with saffron and lime dressing); main courses from £4.95 (fish and chips – sorry, locally caught haddock in a crisp beer batter with French fries) - £7.95 (sirloin of scotch beef with onion rings, mushrooms, tomato, herb butter and French fries). There are various options in between and the usual array of sandwiches, baked potatoes, burgers, breakfasts etc.
This is a “pay and play” course costing £18 per round (£27 day ticket) Monday – Friday and £22 per round (£31 day ticket) at weekends. Telephone bookings on 01334 658780 or online at www.golfagent.co.uk. They have a website at www.elmwood.ac.uk.
OVERALL
I enjoyed the game and the food was excellent but I felt the course was a bit boring. It’s an easy walking course though and it’s not too arduous for beginners.
