I stayed here just before Christmas 2005 and was overwhelmed by how wonderful this hotel is. It is excellent value for money (especially considering that you are getting bed and breakfast and not just the room). The facilities are fab and I loved the location - our room overlooked the Hudson River and the view was fab!
The hotel staff are wonderful and really go out of their way to help. On arrival, I asked if it would be possible to have a room with a view of the river and they found us a great room on the top floor with an AMAZING view. We paid no more than a standard room so it's worth asking for. Likewise, we asked if we could have a fridge in place of the provided minibar (to store juice and snacks etc). The guy was up with the fridge in under 5 minutes - wonderful.
The rooms themselves are actually suites - a bedroom and separate living/dining/kitchenette area and a separate bathroom. They are HUGE by New York standards. We slept 4 adults in the suite - 2 in the bedroom and another 2 in the lounge. It was plenty spacious enough for all our stuff.
The suites are comfortably furnished and spotlessly clean. The bedroom has either 2 queen (standard double) beds or 1 enormous king bed. There is a desk, drawers, wardrobe and large TV. The bedside alarm clock includes a radio plus a connection point for an ipod or mp3 player! The lounge has a very comfy sofabed (double) and is furnished with tables and lamps, a dining table and chairs. There is another large TV and a kitchen area with sink, microwave and coffee maker. The bathroom was wonderfully clean with a bath and good shower. The compimentary toiletries are good quality and re-stocked daily and we always had plenty of towels and flannels etc. You also get a free newspaper delivered (USA Today) on weekdays.
The hotel facilities are excellent and include FREE breakfast daily. This is truly amazing - pancakes and omlettes cooked to order, fresh fruit salad, cereals, toast, bagels, muffins, pastries, yogurt, sausage, potato, egg, tomato, juice & hot drinks. You can either eat it in the restaurant that overlooks the Statue of Liberty (just!) or take it up to your room. There is also a free drinks managers reception in the early evening that includes a wide range of alcoholic and soft drinks and snacks such as Nachos.
Other facilities include free high-speed internet access in the lobby (includes facilities to use Microsoft Word and Excess as well as access to a printer). There is a gym attached to the hotel which guests can use free of charge. There are a couple of restaurants and a cinema that you can get to without leaving the hotel complex which is great on cold evenings for families that may not want to be out late "uptown" but don't just want to sit in their rooms.
The main reason that some people may be reluctant to stay here is its location in lower Manhattan, slightly out of the way of the Midtown Madness (Times Square and Broadway theatres etc.). I found this to be an ADVANTAGE, especially with it being so busy just before Christmas. The public transport links are excellent so if you're on a budget, getting around is no problem. We paid very little for a 7-day transit card that lets you use the buses and subway as much as you want. The nearest subway is a short 5 minute walk and buses stop outside the hotel. There really is no need to spend out on a cab each time you want to go uptown, but of course they're there if you want them. A subway train to Times Square takes around 10 minutes from the nearest subway. We literally were able to get there from our room in around 20minutes which is great. In fact, it could easily take longer if you were staying in a more central location as you'd have to fight your way through crowded streets!
