I had the pleasure of flying to Australia last year on Emirates. We searched around for the best deal and the choice came down to Emirates and Garuda. Well, what with all the shenanigans in East Timor at the time, Indonesia was not the world’s favourite country, so we thought we’d take a look at Emirates.
The website is fairly simple. Not fussy, too busy or confusing. We learned that Emirates had been voted Airline of the Year and that the fleet of aircraft was practically brand new. It was only a few quid more than Garuda, so we went for it. What a good call!
There was more leg room in the economy class seats than I have ever seen on a jumbo jet outside business class. We were impressed with the lumbar support and foot rests. My 6 foot husband was comfortable for once. We also liked the personal seat back video system. Loads of choice and good brand new movies, some of which had not even been released in UK. The food was excellent and the service was superb. You wanted for nothing on that flight.
The other good thing about flying Emirates to Australia is the route choice. You stop at Dubai for the best duty free shopping in the world and then at Singapore. Each leg is about 7 hours with an hour or so break and leg stretch at each stop. Having flown to New Zealand via Los Angeles, two twelve hour stretches are agony. So although the overall journey time is an hour or so longer than going via USA, you arrive in much better shape. Economy class syndrome is always lurking there at the back of the mind! After an hour of wandering around, you get back on that plane as fit as you were when you started.
I would definitely fly with Emirates again, and I would be prepared to pay extra for it.
