A while back I booked a ticket from London to Australia through Emirates. After phoning round a few companies we decided on Emirates priced at £767 return. This may sound expensive but it was at peak season. Gulf Air were £30 cheaper but we were warned against them due to their reputation for delays. When you are doing a 21-hour journey the last thing you want is delays. When we booked the tickets we had to give them a return date but we were told that we could change it as many times as we wanted for free. That was a good deal as other companies were charging £50 for each change.
We had no problems at the airport and we checked in and departed on time. After being used to package holidays where you are crammed in like cattle and spend two hours with your knees at your chest, I was delighted with the Emirates plane. Instead of having 3 seats on either side and 5 in the middle, there was only 2 seats on either side and 3 in the middle and they were like armchairs. So it meant that me and my boyfriend could sit together without a stanger being next to us. Each chair had a tv in the back and they were new films being shown regularly as well as a good choice of programmes such as Friends and Frasier. On top of this you could play Nintendo, listen to music and watch the plane take off and land.
There were plenty of helpful staff who regularly brought round free drinks and we got fed every 3-4 hours. I never thought I would say this about plane food but it was lovely and there was loads of it. At one point I missed a meal as I was sleeping. When I woke up they only had fish left. I only wanted a snack so they said they would rustle something up for me. What I got was 2 rolls and butter, a selection of cheeses, grapes, melon, strawberries and crisps. They even apologised that they couldn't give me anything better!!
On the first leg of the journey, the plane was half empty so we were given blankets and told to help ourselves to the spare seats and lie down.
On arrival at our first stop in Dubai, we were given a voucher for a free pizza and I can honestly say it was the best pizza I have ever tasted.
All in all, it was the best plane journey I have ever been on and had they let me I would happily have stayed on that plane for the rest of my holiday being pampered and waited on hand and foot! - well worth the extra money
