Most people I know I tell "you have to come to Erfurt!" And those of them that have visited Erfurt are indeed very impressed!
Erfurt is a "must" for every Germany traveler. Do you want to cross once a inhabited bridge? Do you want to visit old middle age market with the old flair? Erfurt is situated in the center of Germany. Towns near to visit are Weimar and Eisenach! Erfurt is also not far from Leipzig or Dresden, so if you are there come to visit Erfurt for a one day trip. Erfurt is in the former Eastgermany - this is also another argument why it's an interesting town for a visit! The prices for hotels are not expensive, also Erfurt have a youth hostel! ...weekend away from London, then Erfurt might be your answer. In short - stunning architecture, very friendly people, and good food and drink (you pay in Euros the equivalent of what you might pay in pounds in London.) This is one of the undiscovered gems of Germany and a weekend break destination par excellence. Don't rush to Weimar, just down the road - overrated, in my opinion, and a bit dull - Erfurt is the kind of place that you can spend time ... ...(One puzzling observation - there are a curiously large number of shoe shops for a city this size... plus, they still have a Woolworth's store with pride of place on the main drag - something we haven't seen in the UK for over twenty years... and C and A is still, by the looks of it , the place to shop for that nifty outfit for your discerning Erfurter... interesting examples too of what a friend of mine calles 'Euro Hair' - that is women of a certain ...
